Sri Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe’s decision to dismiss the entire cricket board of the country has been quashed by Sri Lanka’s court of appeal. The decision has been made that all the expelled officials will be hereby restored pending a full hearing.

The decision follows a petition filed by the board’s president, Shammi Silva, who challenged the action taken by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, who had dissolved the Lankan Cricket Board and appointed an interim committee led by former captain Arjuna Ranatunga

According to the board officials, Shammi Silva is set to return to his role which is backed by a court order. this court order prevents the interim committee led by Arjuna Ranatunga from continuing to operate. Additionally, the Lankan government has established a cabinet committee in order to address the ‘outstanding issues’ within the Sri Lanka cricket board.

Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe’s decision to dissolve the entire cricket board came in the wake of a humiliating defeat by India at the World Cup where the Lankans was bundled for 55, losing the match by a huge margin of 302 runs. His decision was rooted in ongoing disputes within the Cricket Board, a board that is regarded as the wealthiest sports organization on the financially challenged island, and allegations of widespread corruption within the board.

Sri Lanka Cricket Is Plagued With Corruption

The head of the interim committee, Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga pledged to reform the Lankan Cricket Board. He wants to rebuild the national cricket team and wants to change the image of the ‘most corrupt institution of the country.’

The Court of Appeal’s decision has noteworthy implications for the future of cricket in the island nation. They will focus on addressing the administrative and governance issues that have plagued cricket in the country. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has been virtually eliminated from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 after suffering a defeat at the hands of Bangladesh.

The Lankans will face their last match against New Zealand, a win will not give them a semi-final spot but their win might benefit Pakistan as New Zealand will be stuck on eight points if they lose against Sri Lanka. Pakistan need to beat England in their last match of the round-robin league.
