Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC)

On Tuesday, November 21, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team will be allowed to compete at the international level despite the recent suspension of the SLC.

Recently, the governing body suspended the membership of the SLC, and the decision was made on charges of government interference in the board.

This came after there was chaos in the SLC following the disastrous World Cup 2023 campaign of the Lankan Lions. Sri Lanka National Cricket Team performed poorly in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and out of the 9 matches in the league stage, they only managed to win 2.

Following the poor performance of the team, the decision was made to sack the entire SLC board, and Arjuna Ranatunga was appointed as the head of a seven-member interim committee to govern the SLC.

Later, the Court of Appeal restored the SLC management headed by Shammi Silva, but again after a few days, the Sri Lankan parliament unanimously passed a resolution, calling for the sacking of the SLC, with both the ruling and opposition parties supporting it.

Sri Lanka can continue to compete internationally – ICC

On Tuesday, the ICC, after a board meeting, announced that the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team can continue to play in both bilateral cricket and ICC events despite the suspension.

However, the funding of Sri Lanka Cricket will be controlled by the International Cricket Council, hence, the next year’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup has been shifted to South Africa from Sri Lanka.

“The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board met today and confirmed the terms of the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

“After hearing representation from SLC, the ICC Board decided that Sri Lanka can continue to compete internationally both in bilateral cricket and ICC events after being suspended recently for breaching its obligations as a Member in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and without government interference,” the ICC said in an official media release.

“However, funding to SLC will be controlled by the ICC and the ICC Board confirmed Sri Lanka will no longer host the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024, which will now be held in South Africa,” the ICC added.

MCC issues statement on Angelo Mathews timed out

The MCC issued a statement in reference to the Angelo Mathews’ Timed Out dismissal which happened during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Angelo Mathews became the first ever player in the history of international cricket to be ‘timed out’.

It happened after Sadeera Samarwickwama’s wicket as Angelo Mathews was coming onto the crease, he realized that his helmet strap was ripped off and he asked for a replacement of the equipment which gave Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan, the opportunity to make an appeal for ‘timed out’. The umpires double-checked with Shakib for the appeal but he was not withdrawing it which led to Mathews’ dismissal.

MCC stated, “The key part of the Law, on this occasion, is that the batter must ‘be ready to receive the ball’. Being on the field, or even at the wicket, is not enough to avoid being Timed out. The batter must be in position for the bowler to be able to bowl inside the allotted time. The umpires determined that Mathews was not ready to face the ball within that two-minute allowance. He subsequently suffered an issue with his helmet, causing further delay.”

What Does The Law States About ‘Timed Out’? MCC Reveals

The relevant Law here is Law 40.1.1, which states: “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes (2 minutes in case of ICC Playing Conditions) of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

Angelo Mathews was near the 30-yard circle after 90 seconds of Samarwickrama’s wicket, he started to jog towards the crease as soon he realized that he was short on time but after reaching he realized that his helmet strap was off. The MCC stated that Mathews could have informed the umpire about the helmet which would have led to an official break from the umpire thus, preventing the ‘timed out’ situation.

However, Angelo Mathews indicated towards the dugout for a helmet and waited for another helmet which gave Shakib the complete authority to make an appeal and have him ‘timed out’. MCC also explained the requirement for the ‘timed out’ law.

The MCC stated, “Without this Law, a batter could waste time at the fall of a wicket, choosing not to come to the crease in a timely manner. This is particularly problematic in timed cricket when the light may be fading and draw a favourable result, but it is also relevant in limited-overs cricket, where the fielding side is often punished for slow over-rates. Even if the intent is not specifically to waste time, a Law is required to keep the game moving and prevent significant delays between wickets.”

“Given that Time had not been called, and that at the time of the appeal more than two minutes had elapsed, the umpires correctly gave Mathews out. In fact, there was no other action for the umpires to take within the Laws of Cricket. “

Angelo Mathews’ ‘timed out’ created a lot of debate regarding the spirit of cricket and how it was completely unfair as Mathews was not deliberately wasting time. However, Shakib Al Hasan was not bound by the Spirit of Cricket, if it is in the rules and laws of the game then it is in the spirit of the game. The rules suggest Mathews was supposed to be out.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC)

On Friday, November 10, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership. The decision has been made on charges of government interference.

Sri Lanka National Cricket Team performed poorly in the ongoing edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Out of the 9 matches in the league stage, the Lankan Lions only managed to win 2 matches and ended the competition with just 4 points in their bag. With the poor World Cup performance, they have also failed to qualify for the 2025 Championship Trophy.

Following the poor performance of the team on the field, there was a lot of chaos in the SLC. On Thursday, the Sri Lankan parliament unanimously passed a resolution, calling for the sacking of the SLC, with both the ruling and opposition parties supporting it. This came a couple of days after the Court of Appeal restored the SLC management headed by Shammi Silva on Tuesday.

Notably, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe on Monday made the decision to sack the entire Sri Lanka Cricket board following the Kusal Mendis-led side’s humiliating defeat at the hands of India. Also, the legendary cricketer Arjuna Ranatunga was appointed as the head of a seven-member interim committee to govern the SLC

Sri Lanka Cricket Suspended By ICC

With all the government interference in Sri Lanka Cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has made the decision to suspend the board’s membership with the ICC.

“The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of the ICC with immediate effect.

“The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation, and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.

“The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course,’ the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in an official media release.

Talking about Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign, the team suffered a major blow when skipper Dasun Shanaka got ruled out and Kusal Mendis was handed the leadership role.

Mendis was in red-hot form with the bat in the competition initially but wasn’t able to handle the pressure of captaincy and his performance went downhill. Also, the Lankan Lions only won two matches in the competition against the Netherlands and England.

Bangladesh Coach Chandika Hathurusingha Bats For Timed Out Rule Change After Angelo Mathews-Shakib Al Hasan Debacle

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha has had his say on Angelo Mathews’ controversial timed-out dismissal in the game against Sri Lanka. As it turned out Bangladesh won the game in the end and notched up their second win of this campaign.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan said that he did it since it was within the laws saying that he took the game as being in a war situation and doing what was best for the team’s cause.

Mathews was ruled timed-out after he exceeded the two minutes allowed for an incoming batsman to take strike since he had to fix the broken strap of his helmet. This happened after Shakib appealed against him. He was thus dismissed without even facing a ball.

Leave The Decision To The Umpires: Chandika Hathurusingha

Now the Bangladesh coach, who is a Sri Lanka by birth and a former Sri Lankan cricketer, said that he will leave it up to the umpires to decide whether the mode of dismissal should be kept on or not.

“I don’t think it (the row) is going to stop here, whatever I say. The only thing I can say is that it’s one of the modes of dismissal. My suggestion is to leave it to the umpires to decide, I don’t think you should leave it to the players to appeal and all that” said Haturusingha.

The Bangladesh coach also kept a word on Shakib’s future. He played his fifth World Cup but failed to make an impact like he did in the last World Cup. His fellow teammates Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah also might have played their last World Cups.

“We have had him for a long time, when you have someone of Shakib’s caliber as your number one all-rounder, it’s two players in one…It’s hard (to replace him in the side). They have been the best of Bangladesh cricket in the short journey of Bangladesh cricket. If they decided to quit, it’s a change (passing) of the baton kind of thing,” the Bangladesh coach said.

The Tigers play their last game against Australia on November 11, Saturday with their Champions Trophy 2025 qualification on the line.

Sri Lanka Cricket Team

In the wake of Sri Lanka‘s disastrous campaign in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, their chief selector Pramodaya Wickramasingha has come up with an explosive claim.

Sri Lanka never really looked in contention to do well in the competition as they failed to perform well right from the start. The team, as well as the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board, has come under immense scrutiny not only because of the defeats but also because of the nature of the defeats. After India bowled them out for a paltry total of 55 runs, the entire SLC board was sacked.

Hopes were sky high from the team after the fine campaign in the Asia Cup where it made it to the final. However, Kusal Mendis & Co. failed to live up to the expectations. The Islanders began their campaign with three defeats in a row before beating England and the Netherlands. And those twin wins were followed by four more defeats including losses against the likes of Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The poor run has only dumped Sri Lanka out of the World Cup but has also pretty much ended their hopes of playing in the Champions Trophy in 2025. They are currently languishing at the ninth spot in the points table with 2 wins and 7 losses.

Pramodaya Wickramasingha on Sri Lanka’s disastrous performance:

With the entire team, selectors, and administrators under fire for the disastrous performance in the World Cup, Pramodaya Wickramasingha has claimed that there is more than meets the eye. He has claimed that an “outside conspiracy” derailed Sri Lanka’s campaign in the tournament.

“Give me two days to disclose everything about it. This was the result of a conspiracy from outside,” Wickramasingha told PTI. “It is very sad, I am taking responsibility.”

Meanwhile, a Sri Lanka court has reinstated SLC after the board was sacked by the sports minister. On Thursday, a joint resolution in parliament, involving both the government and the opposition, called for the resignation of the SLC’s management.

Angelo Mathews

Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg defended Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews‘ timed-out dismissal against Bangladesh. Brad Hogg suggested that Angelo Mathews deserved the dismissal, emphasizing his responsibility to be ready to face the next ball.

Mathews became the first batter to be dismissed ‘timed-out’ in Delhi on November 6. His dismissal occurred as he failed to face the ball within two minutes due to a broken helmet strap. Shakib Al Hasan appealed for his dismissal, and the umpire ruled in their favor.

You Are Not Preparing Yourself – Brad Hogg

In a video on his Instagram handle, Brad Hogg suggested that Angelo Mathews’ dismissal was a result of not being prepared within the stipulated time frame after a wicket falls. Hogg stressed the importance of timing and readiness for batters.

“Batsmen, it’s all about timing. If you can’t find the middle, you shouldn’t be there. Angelo Mathews got exactly what he deserved. You’ve got two minutes as a batsman to get off your backside, get out and be ready to face the next ball after a wicket has fallen. If you can’t do that, well you are not preparing yourself appropriately,” Hogg  said.

Following his timing out, Mathews criticized Shakib, arguing that he was at the crease before the deadline. However, an ESPNcricinfo report noted that the umpires had previously warned Mathews about the timing out risk before the helmet issue occurred.

Don’t Want To Happen It Again – Brad Hogg

The left-arm wrist spinner expressed his disapproval of the timed out dismissal, suggesting an alternative solution to penalize the batting side with a run penalty when the batters aren’t ready.

“Now, I don’t like this dismissal. It’s the first time that it’s happened in international cricket. I don’t want it to happen again. Instead of having the batsmen being dismissed, I think umpires should be able to give 12-run penalty at least – a harsh penalty to the batting side for not being ready. That will make them get on their tippy toes and make sure they are out ready to face the next ball, when a wicket falls.”

Aakash Chopra On Sri Lanka Cricket Team

After the thrashing defeat against New Zealand, the hopes of a spot in the ICC Champions Trophy for Sri Lanka are virtually over. Aakash Chopra has pointed out that they are almost out of the race for a Champions Trophy spot after losing so heavily against New Zealand. The Lankan Lions were bundled for a meagre 171 on a batting-friendly track at Bengaluru. The Blackcaps performed an easy chase by getting to the target in just 26.4 overs with five wickets in hand

While reviewing the match on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra opined that Sri Lanka’s chance for participation in the ICC Champions Trophy is over. He said, “Sri Lanka’s situation has been extremely ordinary. I feel they will bid goodbye to the Champions Trophy in the end because they are at No. 9. So their Champions Trophy is gone. They are not going to move up, all their matches are finished.”

Aakash Chopra praised New Zealand’s bowlers for taking complete advantage of the conditions early on and dominating the game from the start, He elaborated, “New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl, and they came out firing on all cylinders. It seemed like they would get them all out for 25, wickets were falling one after the other. If Kusal Perera’s catch had been taken, the job would have been done and dusted.”

Kusal Perera, who smashed 51 off 28 balls was earlier dropped by Tom Latham but the Blackcaps were hunting from the other end. Eventually. The swashbuckling opener, Kusal Perera was dismissed in the 10th over leaving the team at a precarious 70/5. New Zealand bowlers were breathing fire and Sri Lanka was annihilated in that pretty well.

Aakash Chopra Criticises Sri Lanka’s Top Order

Aakash Chopra pointed out that Sri Lanka’s top order was shattered by the Kiwis. He explained, “The scoreboard was looking funny. Pathum Nissanka scored two, Kusal Mendis scored six, Sadeera Samarawickrama scored one, Charith Asalanka scored eight, and Angelo Mathews scored 16. Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka scored a few runs in the end and took them to 171 but nothing was going to happen.”

Chopra praised New Zealand’s aggressive and attacking approach in the run chase, which virtually sealed their spot in the semi-final. He stated, “New Zealand came to play with the intention of finishing it early. They knew that the bigger the margin of their win, the more difficult it would be for the others to knock them out. They lost four matches in a row, they weren’t a team like that. So it was a slight setback but they are back on track.”

The only chance for Sri Lanka to now qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy is if Bangladesh or England lose their respective matches against South Africa and Pakistan by a higher margin. If England’s NRR or Bangladesh’s NRR falls below Sri Lanka’s NRR then they still have a chance to make it to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Sri Lanka had a complete disaster of a tournament in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with only two wins in nine games.

Hasan Raza On Sri Lanka Cricket Team

The Sri Lanka cricket team had a disaster of a tournament in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The 1996 World Cup champions ended their World Cup campaign after suffering a defeat against New Zealand. They could only manage two wins in nine matches in the tournament. Firstly Sri Lanka had to play the qualifiers in order to qualify for the World Cup and then they performed drastically poor in the entire tournament.

Sri Lanka could only manage to defeat the Netherlands and England in the tournament. They lost against the likes of Afghanistan and Bangladesh and unexpectedly gifted the match to Pakistan in a massive chase of 345 with their misfields and dropped catches. The biggest defeat for them again came against India where they were bundled for 55 while chasing a target of 358.

Former Pakistan cricketer Hasan Raza talked about how the Sri Lankan team always looks in a hurry and due to that they lose their wickets in quick sessions. He also stated that the Sri Lanka Cricket Board will start a probe into the national team’s performance after the Asia Cup and World Cup collapse. Sri Lanka was bundled for a meager total of 50 in the Asia Cup finals against India.

“They are in a hurry and even the Sri Lankan board has talked about an analysis on the team about the team’s collapse in Asia Cup and the World Cup. There is some sort of influence that will be investigated by the committee which will sit on the Board,” stated Hasan Raza

Sri Lanka Team Lacks Consistency, Says Hasan Raza

Hasan Raza then mentioned the Angelo Mathews incident (he was given timed out against Bangladesh) and what impact it had on Mathews. Raza was quick to notice that Mathews’ body language was not looking very good against New Zealand after the incident and he eventually gave an easy catch to the slips off Santner’s delivery.

“The incident with Angelo Mathews is also noteworthy, even today his body language was not very good while playing. First, there was a slip fielder then he was removed from there, then again in Santner’s over there was a slip and he tried playing there and got out on slips,” Raza added.

Hasan Raza later revealed that the Sri Lankan Cricket Board is forming a committee of five to six members that will look into the team’s performance from the Asia Cup to the World Cup, Hasan said that the team is good at fielding and bowling but lacks consistency in batting. They don’t have the energy that other team players have.

“First the board should intervene, the Sri Lankan board has already said that they will form a five-six member committee. When the team goes back to Sri Lanka after the World Cup then look at the way they have lost since Asia Cup.”

“The team is good at fielding, good in bowling but still consistency is very important and whenever a nation is playing then the reputed names play an important part and the country that plays for reputation plays for the names that have represented them in the past. I didn’t find that quality in the Sri Lankan batting and the energy was not there,” Raza concluded.

Sri Lanka is almost out of contention for qualifying for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The team needs severe steps of reformation and they have to get back on their own.

Bangladesh Coach Chandika Hathurusingha Bats For Timed Out Rule Change After Angelo Mathews-Shakib Al Hasan Debacle

Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was controversially timed out against Bangladesh after Shakib Al Hasan appealed against him in the match. In the process, Mathews became the first batsman in the history of the game to be dismissed times out.

The Bangladesh cricket team and their skipper Shakib coped with a lot of criticism. He was also accused of disrupting the spirit of the game by cricket experts and fans alike. Shakib however, stood his ground and said that he appealed because it was within the laws of the game.

Angelo Mathews was asked to walk off the field by the umpires after Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a time-out when Mathews was trying to get his helmet changed. He did come to the crease on time but his helmet strap came off and he wanted his helmet to be changed. That prompted Shakib to appeal against him and eventually, he was dismissed. He had to walk off the ground without even facing a ball.

Now ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reacted to this incident. He was the one who advocated for Mankad dismissals in the past and appealed against batsman leaving their crease way too early. However, he sympathised with Mathews saying that he had the right to be disappointed after Shakib’s appeal.

“One side is talking about the rules and another side is talking about the spirit of cricket. When Mathews came out to bat, his helmet was not okay, and he wanted to change that. I saw another video where Shakib did not bring his guard against Sri Lanka and he was allowed to bring it later. It has almost become warfare between these two countries,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“Actually with timed-out, yes Shakib appealed and the umpire gave it out, agreed. Recently, there has been information that Mathews was already warned by the umpires about the timed-out dismissal. But Mathews was really upset that he got out, and rightly so. No one should get out like that, everyone will feel bad about that,” Ashwin further added.

Both Angelo Mathews And Shakib Al Hasan Were Right: Ravichandran Ashwin

He concluded by saying that this incident has further fuelled the rivalry between the two cricket nations. Ashwin said that both cricketers were right in doing what they did except that it looked like a war in the middle.

“Both Angelo Mathews and Shakib Al Hasan were right. One person knew the rule and the other person asked if he could let it go since it was a helmet malfunction. The affected party is certainly the one who got out,” Ashwin concluded.

Defending champions England will face the Pakistan team in their final league match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, November 11. This match holds significance as the England team is at risk of missing the Champions Trophy 2025.

The ICC announced that the top 8 teams in the World Cup will qualify for the Champions Trophy. India, South Africa, Australia, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have secured berths, while England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands are competing for the two spots.

Revealed – Who Will Qualify For Champions Trophy 2025?

England needs to win a match against England and hope Bangladesh and the Netherlands lose as well. Even if they lose, the Jost Buttler-led team would hope to maintain a higher net run rate (NRR) than Sri Lanka and rely on other teams losing their matches in the event.

Bangladesh faces a tough task to secure a spot in the Champions Trophy as their lower NRR places them behind England on the table. Bangladesh requires a significant victory against Australia to impact their NRR or a loss that doesn’t drop them below Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has completed their matches in the World Cup and now relies on other teams’ outcomes. They require two of the England, Bangladesh, and Netherlands matches by a significant margin to secure their spot in the Champions Trophy based on NRR.

Dutch face a challenge after their significant loss to England, occupying the bottom place. They will face India in their next match, but the victory will not secure their berth. They require a substantial victory and a significant loss from either Bangladesh or England.

It’s A Huge Game For Us – Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler stressed the importance of the upcoming game against Pakistan in Kolkata, acknowledging its significance in ending their trip to India on a high note. They aimed to deliver a stronger performance, considering the challenges they’ve faced so far.

“Yeah, vital. It’s a huge game for us. We haven’t performed the way we wanted to this whole trip, and we’d like to leave India putting in a proper performance. So, yeah, it’s a huge game for us. Yeah, they’re a top team. We look forward to a really good game against them and it will start again. But yeah, we can take confidence from the stuff we’ve done well today,” Buttler said.

The seasoned India National Cricket Team left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat slammed the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team all-rounder Angelo Mathews following his timed-out dismissal controversy in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match between the Asian rivals – Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6, saw a massive controversy.

Sri Lanka all-rounder was declared timed out after the appeal from Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan. After walking onto the pitch, Angelo Mathews asked for a helmet change as the strap of his helmet broke just as he was tightening it around his chin.

Mathews called for a replacement helmet, which was brought in by Chamika Karunaratne, and that was when Shakib Al Hasan appealed for timed-out dismissal. The on-field umpires after a lengthy discussion declared the all-rounder out. They also asked whether Shakib wanted to withdraw his appeal, which he denied.

This is a cricket ground and not your backyard – Jaydev Unadkat slams Angelo Mathews

India National Cricket Team pacer came out in support of Bangladesh amid the controversy. He took to his official X handle to repost a post that mentioned how the on-field umpire Richard Illingworth had informed Angelo Mathews about the timing prior to the problem with his helmet strap.

The post of Jaydev Unadkat garnered the attention of netizens during Sri Lanka’s match against New Zealand. In his post, he slammed the Sri Lanka all-rounder, saying that he should himself show the sportsmanship if he expects the same from others.

“This is why you should always listen to both sides of the story before jumping to conclusions and giving sympathy points. This is a cricket ground and not your backyard where you can laze around. if you expect sportsmanship, show some yourself first (by taking the umpire’s consent to change the equipment and not just wandering off the pitch as if you don’t care),” the Indian pacer said.

After the Mathews incidents, the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team and Bangladesh National Cricket Team players avoided the customary post-match handshakes following the conclusion of the game.

Charith Asalanka oozed his class on the field as he bagged a magnificent catch in the ICC World Cup 2023 game against New Zealand. The 41st match of the tournament took place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and it saw Kiwis dominating it.

Despite Sri Lanka defending a low total, the intensity of the players on the field was staggering. They gave their everything and made sure to stretch the things as long as they could. Charith Asalanka was the prime example of it as he produced a stupendous effort to send Daryl Mitchell packing.

Angelo Mathews bowled a pace-off delivery that was full and outside off. Daryl Mitchell tried to loft over the cover but was early on the shot. He ended up chipping it up in the air. The ball went towards the deep point, where Charith Asalanka came sprinting and put a staggering dive to complete the catch.

Daryl Mitchell played a brutal knock for his team and scored 43 runs off 31 balls. His staggering knock powered New Zealand to win. Apart from him openers Devon Conway (45) and Rachin Ravindra (42) batted aggressively and added 88 runs for the opening partnership and gave a blistering start.

Sri Lanka picked 5 wickets with Angelo Mathews picking two and Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera bagging one scalp each. They also almost lost out on a spot for the Champions Trophy 2025.

NZ vs SL: Very happy to see players putting their hands up and performing – Kusal Mendis after Sri Lanka’s loss

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis talked about the loss his side suffered against New Zealand. He admitted that they didn’t bat well. He also was disappointed with his individual performance and was happy that players took responsibility in the crunch situations. Speaking to broadcasters, he explained:

“We lost 4 wickets in first 10 overs and that’s what got us into trouble. We could have easily gotten 300 on this pitch. Madushanka bowled really well but it was tough to take wickets because we were defending a small total. Quite enjoyed captaincy, disappointed about my own performance but overall it was enjoyable. Very happy to see players putting their hands up and performing.”

To qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025, Sri Lanka would be hoping that Pakistan do some miracle and qualify for the semi-finals. It will then push England’s NRR below their own.

Then the incident took place on the 4th ball of the 24th over. Lockie Ferguson bowled a low full-toss to Dushmantha Chameera. The batter defended and got a massive inside edge. Daryl Mitchell, who was in the slips, was sure that it was out. He convinced skipper Kane Williamson to take the review.

Trent Boult has picked three wickets whereas Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee also combined to pick three scalps. Mitchell Santner also has bagged two wickets along with Rachin Ravindra, who picked one. New Zealand reduced Sri Lanka to 128/9.

MCC issues statement on Angelo Mathews timed out

Angelo Mathews was part of a huge controversy that erupted this week after he became the first-ever player to be timed out in the 146-year-old history of the game. The incident took place during the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh game at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Angelo Mathews was coming to bat after Sadeera Samarwickrama’s wicket, he was at the crease before the stipulated two minutes but as soon as he was getting ready to take his guard, the strap of his helmet snapped off.

Shakib Al Hasan found the opportunity to make an appeal for time out and Mathews was given out by the umpires as Law 40 of the Laws of Cricket provides that, “An incoming batter must be in a position to take the guard or for their partner to be ready to receive the next ball within three minutes (2 minutes in ICC playing conditions) of the fall of the previous wicket. If the player fails to do so then the fielding team can make an appeal to the umpire and the batter can be declared ‘timed out’”.

Following the incident, Angelo Mathews’ brother, Trevin, also slammed Shakib for his actions, saying that the Bangladesh skipper would not be welcomed in Sri Lanka. Trevin threatened that Shakib would be pelted with stones if he came to play in Sri Lanka.

However, LPL franchise Galle Titans released a statement regarding these hurtful claims made by Trevis Mathews. They condemned these threatening remarks and asked everyone to not judge an entire country by the opinion of one person. They assured that Sri Lanka will accept any player from any country very lovingly at any time.

Watch- Galle Titans Releasing A Statement On Angelo Mathews-Shakib Al Hasan Controversy

“We are very disappointed. The Bangladeshi captain has no sportsman spirit and did not show humanity in the gentleman’s game. We never expected this right from his captain to the rest of the team members. Shakib is not welcome in Sri Lanka. If he comes here to play any international or LPL matches, stones will be thrown at him, or he will have to face the annoyance of the fans,” Trevin said as quoted by BDCricTime.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are now fighting for a spot in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. A total of eight teams will qualify for the tournament with Pakistan already being qualified as the hosts. The remaining seven teams will be decided by the World Cup points table. Currently, England is ahead of  Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for Champions Trophy qualification but there can be a shift of positions if Bangladesh and Sri Lanka manage to upset Australia and New Zealand respectively.

ICC Men's ODI Cricket World Cup Winners List From 1975 To 2019

ICC World Cup Ranking: The much-awaited ICC World Cup 2023 is just a handful of months away. The 13th edition of the quadrennial event is scheduled to be played in October-November. For the very first time, India will be hosting the tournament as the sole host. In the past, India had co-hosted the competition as many as three times – 1987, 1996, and 2011.

ICC World Cup 2023 Teams and Formats:

A total of 10 teams will be taking part in the upcoming edition of the ICC World Cup or the ICC Men’s Cricket World. The format of the competition will be similar to the 2019 edition – a round-robin stage followed by the knockouts.

In the round-robin stage, each team will play against the other nine teams once. A team will receive 2 points for a win while a no-result will see both teams getting one point each. The top four teams will then make it to the semifinals. The first-placed team will lock horns against the fourth-placed team in the semifinal while the second and third-placed teams will be up against each other for a place in the title decider.

ICC World Cup Teams:

Ten teams are participating in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. While India has booked their place in the competition as hosts, the other nine teams will have to do it through qualification events. The main route to the ICC World Cup is the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. The top seven sides in the competition along with hosts India have sealed an automatic qualification for the marquee event.

The remaining two spots will be decided by a qualifier event scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe in June-July.  The five remaining teams on the Super League table, the top three teams from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, and the top two teams from the 2023 World Cup Qualifier Playoff will be taking part in the qualifier.

Hosts India and England, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and South Africa have booked their spots for the ICC World Cup from the Super League. On the other hand, Ireland, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Nepal, Oman, Scotland, United Arab Emirates, and the United States will be taking part in the Qualifiers for the remaining two spots.

ICC World Cup Ranking:

The ICC World Cup Ranking or the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League Standings has been finalized following the conclusion of the three-match ODI series between Ireland and Bangladesh. The league got underway in July 2020 and ended in May 2023.

A total of 13 teams featured in the Super League-12 Full Members of the ICC and the Netherlands, who qualified for the event after winning the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship. Each team earned 10 points for a win, five for a tie/no result/abandoned match, and zero for a loss.

Coming to the ICC World Cup Ranking, New Zealand have finished as the top-ranked side with 175 points. Reigning 50-over world champions England and Bangladesh are second and third on the list with 155 points followed by India and Pakistan who have 139 and 130 points respectively.

New Zealand And Sri Lanka

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will lock horns in their final league stage match at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, November 9. However, the rain could potentially disrupt the crucial match ahead of the semi-final stage.

The Kane Williamson-led team will aim to end their losing streak to maintain hopes of reaching the semi-finals. The Kiwis could secure a spot in the semi-finals with a victory in their last league match. They currently hold the fourth position in the table with 8 points.

Sri Lanka has had a disappointing campaign in the tournament, as they secured only two wins out of eight matches. They are currently in the ninth position, and a victory would help them secure their place in the 2025 Champions Trophy as the top eight teams qualify.

Weather Forecast Suggests Rain Can Affect The Game

Rain had a significant impact on New Zealand’s last World Cup match at the same venue, resulting in a loss to Pakistan by the DLS method, despite the Kiwis scoring 400 runs. The Black Caps suffered four consecutive losses in the league stage of the tournament.

The Accuweather forecast suggests rain can affect the New Zealand-Sri Lanka match. A 90 percent chance of precipitation and a 54 percent chance of thunderstorms are expected, with a predicted continuous rain spell of three hours and 86 percent cloud cover.

Watch – Bengaluru’s Weather Ahead Of New Zealand-Sri Lanka Match

RevSportz journalist Subhayan Chakraborty shared a weather update for the Bengaluru match, noting overcast and gloomy conditions with chances of rain. The uncertain weather raises the possibility of an India-Pakistan semi-final match in the prestigious tournament.

Lots Of Things That We Can’t Control – Kane Williamson

Speaking ahead of the Sri Lanka fixture, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said that he isn’t concerned about the uncontrollable weather conditions and prefers to focus on the match.

“There are lots of things that we can’t control and the weather is one of those. There’s been a lot of weather around and it could look different tomorrow. So, we’ll just have to play what’s in front of us and focus on our skills as a batting and bowling unit, whether that’s looking to be aggressive or trying to handle some death overs as well as we can,” Williamson said.

“Or with the bat, assessing conditions and trying to do the job and building those partnerships. But at the end of the day, our focus will be on the cricket that we want to play and trying to put all our focus and energy into that. That gives us the best chance of putting out a good performance. And so that’ll be what we try and do,” he added.

The NZ vs SL ICC World Cup 2023 match will be played in Bengaluru on November 9, 2023. The match starts at 2 pm IST and is a must-win game for both teams. Sri Lanka lost their previous game against Bangladesh while the Kiwis lost to Pakistan.

The NZ vs SL match thus is almost a knockout match before the semi-final. The team that wins this game will knock the other team out of the competition. Both teams have struggled to play consistent cricket and in this game will need to play as a unit.

In 101 ODIs between the two sides, NZ have won 51 matches while SL have won 41 matches. 8 matches have ended in no results. In 11 ODI World Cup games, Sri Lanka have a 6-5 head-to-head record. Their previous win against Bangladesh will give them the confidence to notch up back-to-back wins.

Meanwhile, the weather forecast for the NZ vs SL game does not look good. There is a forecast for rain throughout the next week. There is a 90 percent chance of rain on the matchday which is November 9, Thursday. The Kiwis have already lost a rain-affected game in Bengaluru.

This being a must-win game for both teams, New Zealand and Sri Lanka both know very well what they need to do. Both teams need to pull their socks up and it will be interesting to see how they handle the pressure.

NZ vs SL Match Preview– ICC World Cup 2023, Match 41

New Zealand

Despite scoring over 400 runs against Pakistan, the Kiwis ended up losing the game. pakistan in the first 25 overs were 200/1 scoring almost half the runs needed to win. Their bowlers need to correct their mistakes and need to regroup as a bowling group. The pace trio of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, and Lockie Ferguson need to find the right length.

Their batters simply have to continue their good form. Devon Conway especially after his first couple of games has lost some of his form. In Indin conditions, he holds the key in a big game like the next one. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell also are key batters in the lineup. Skipper Kane Williamson scored a brilliant 95 on his comeback game and held the key as well.

New Zealand Squad

Kane Williamson (c), Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Will Young

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh in their previous game and got up to six points from eight games. Their previous loss against Bangladesh came as they failed to defend 280 and under controversial circumstances. The Islanders need to take a leaf out of their performance against England and stay at it against the Kiwis. Overall, they have been inconsistent teams and their loss against India affected their NRR in a big way.

Dilshan Madushanka has been the leading wicket-taker for the side while all the others have struggled. Maheesh Theekshana especially in the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga has looked half as effective. With key bowlers out of the side, eyes will be once again on Madushanka to give them a good start inside the powerplay.

Sri Lanka Squad

Kusal Mendis (c), Kusal Perera, Pathum Nissanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Kasun Rajitha, Angelo Mathews, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushan Hemantha, Chamika Karunaratne

Bengaluru is all set to host the NZ vs SL ICC World Cup 2023 match on November 9, Monday. The match starts at 2 pm IST and is the last league game for both teams. Both teams face a must-win situation with New Zealand needing a win to secure qualification.

New Zealand are heading into this game after their loss to Pakistan in their previous game. This was their fourth loss on the trot after winning four on the bounce. They lost to India, Australia, South Africa, and Pakistan in consecutive games but have managed to hold onto the fourth position on the table.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, lost against Bangladesh after losing badly to India. They lost by 302 runs to India being bowled out for just 55 with their NRR taking a lot of beating. Getting to six points might not be enough for the Lankans to secure a qualification spot as they are way behind on the NRR.

The two teams have played over 100 ODIs with Sri Lanka winning 41 games while the Kiwis 51. In 11 50-over NZ vs SL World Cup games, Sri Lanka have a 6-5 head-to-head count. Given this is a must-win game for both teams, we can expect a close contest.

Rain played spoilsport in the PAK vs NZ game as the Kiwis lost the match despite scoring 401 runs in the game. Rain always has been a concern in games in Bangalore and might be a matter of concern in this game as well. The Kiwis have already lost a game on the DLS method against Pakistan.

Talking about the weather conditions, there is a forecast for rain throughout the whole week next week. For the NZ vs SL game on Monday, there are 90 percent chance of rain overall with the afternoon being mostly cloudy and there is a chance of rain as well. In the evening, the weather conditions will be overcast with a 40 percent chance of rain. Thus this match is also likely to be affected by rain with the DLS method possibly deciding the result.

New Zealand Playing 11 vs India – ICC World Cup 2023, Semi-Final 1

New Zealand take on Sri Lanka in match 41 of the ICC World Cup 2023 in Bengaluru. The match starts at 2 p.m. with the Kiwis facing a must-win situation. They lost their previous game against Pakistan in Bengaluru.

The loss to Pakistan in the previous game has meant that their last game against Sri Lanka is a must-win if they are to make the semi-final. A win will secure a place in the semi-final. The Kiwis lost to Pakistan despite scoring over 400 runs in the game against Pakistan.

New Zealand won their first four games and then got into a losing streak since their loss against India. They lost closely to Australia and were, unfortunately, to lose on the DLS method against the Men in Green.

The two teams have played over 100 ODIs with New Zealand winning 51 games and Sri Lanka winning 41 games. However, in World Cup matches, Sri Lanka are ahead of than Kiwis on the head-to-head count.

The Kiwis scored over 400 ruins in the match against Bengaluru in the last game. They should target something similar against a depleted Sri Lankan bowling attack.

The only concern in the game is rain which is expected to play spoilsport. There is a forecast of rain throughout next week with Thursday expected to see a 90 percent chance of rain throughout the day. They already lost a match on the DRS count against Pakistan. A loss against Sri Lanka might make their qualification difficult.

New Zealand are placed fourth while Sri Lanka is placed seventh with Bangladesh and England eliminated from the tournament. The Lankans defeated the Tigers in their last game to get to six points.

New Zealand after four back-to-back losses have managed to hold onto the fourth position on the points table. They lost their last game against Pakistan in Bengaluru. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, defeated England at the same venue. The return of Kane Williamson was a massive boost for the Kiwis in the last game.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, is missing their skipper Dasun Shanaka and their key bowlers Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana, and Lahiru Kumara. Dilshan Madushanka has managed to take 18 wickets while all the other bowlers have struggled. He holds the key for the Lankans in the NZ vs SL match.

The NZ vs SL ICC World Cup 2023 match will be played in Bengaluru on November 9, Thursday. The match starts at 2 pm and is a must-win game for both teams. Sri Lanka and New Zealand find themselves in dire straits in the business end of the league stage.

New Zealand after four back-to-back wins, lost their first game against India. Since then they have lost three on the trot including the India game. Against Sri Lanka, who are looking like a depleted side, especially after the loss to India, they have a big chance to win big and secure a semi-final spot. Currently, the Kiwis are in the fourth spot with four wins and as many losses from 8 games.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are placed eighth with two wins so far in the tournament. The loss to India was a big setback for their NRR and the team is now placed below Afghanistan and Pakistan on the table. They lost their games to both those teams giving them a huge lead in the tournament. They have two games remaining and need to win both games to stay alive in the semi-final race. Even 6 points might not be enough to take them through.

Sri Lanka Playing 11 vs New Zealand – ICC World Cup 2023, Match 41

Sri Lanka takes on New Zealand in their final league stage game before the ICC World Cup semi-finals. The match will be played in Bengaluru on November 9. The match starts at 2 pm IST and is a must-win game for the Islanders.

They are heading into this game on the back of three losses that haven’t trotted since their win against England.  A win takes them to eight points which might not be enough to take them to the knockouts. Sri Lanka after their loss against Bangladesh went to eighth on the points table.

Their previous loss against Bangladesh came under controversial circumstances. Against New Zealand, they have a good record in World Cup winning six out of the 11 games played. A win against New Zealand takes them to six points which might not be enough for a place in the final four.

The Sri Lankan batters had a good performance against Bangladesh and need to replicate that against the Kiwis. They scored 279 against Bangladesh in Delhi and need to target at least over 300 against New Zealand.

NZ vs SL Match Preview– ICC World Cup 2023, Match 41

The NZ vs SL ICC World Cup 2023 match will be played in Bengaluru on November 9. The match starts at 2 pm and is a must-win game for both teams. New Zealand after their loss to Pakistan in the previous game finds themselves in a tricky situation while Sri Lanka’s NRR took a beating after a 302-run loss to India.

New Zealand posted over 400 runs against Pakistan but lost the match on the DRS method with Pakistan being ahead of the run rate at the halfway point. The Men in Green ultimately won the match by 21 runs on the DLS method as they were 200.1 at 25.3 overs chasing 402 to win.

Sri Lanka, after their loss to India needs to win their remaining games. They lost Bangladesh and are now need another big win against the Kiwis. Even getting to six points might not be enough for the Sri Lankan side to make the playoffs.

The two teams have had a very different campaign so far. The Kiwis won their first four games and lost their next four. Their last loss to Pakistan was a bit unfortunate. However, they have still managed to stay within the top four.

Sri Lanka never managed to get any momentum throughout the tournament. They won three games but those wins were hard-fought ones. Both the teams have played one match each before in Bengaluru in this World Cup. Thus this NZ vs SL match looks to be an exciting prospect.

The two teams have played 101 ODIs to date with the Kiwis winning 51 games and the Lankans 41. In 11 50-over NZ vs SL World Cup games, New Zealand have won five games and Sri Lanka six. The Kiwis have to win this game to finish within the top four with 10 points. Only a win takes them through to the semis. A loss almost knocks them out.

Sri Lanka MP Wimal Weerawansa expressed concerns in Parliament about the national team’s performance in the World Cup 2023. Wimal Weerawansa questioned Mahela Jayawardene’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss in a match against India.

Sri Lanka‘s captain, Kusal Mendis, chose to bat first against India in Mumbai on November 2. However, their decision backfired as they conceded 357 runs to the opposition team in 50 overs. In response, they were bowled out for just 55 runs without showing any fight.

Even Indian Captain Was Shocked – Wimal Weerawansa

Wimal Weerawansa pointed out that even Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was surprised after Sri Lanka decided to bowl first. He suggested that the ICC is influenced by India and that the Sri Lankan selection committee is appointed by India.

“That day after winning the toss against India. It’s Mahela Jayawardene, who told Sri Lankan captain to bowl first. Even Indian Captain was shocked as why he opted to bowl first, even they were eager to bat first on that pitch. ICC is ruled by India,” Weerawansa said.

“Even Sri Lankan selection committee is appointed by India. There were no opening ceremonies in the tournament, but they held a ceremony in #INDVPAK match. There is something big goin on in Cricket. We have to find out why Mahela advised Kusal mendis to go for bowl first option.”

Called For An Urgent And Comprehensive Explanation – The Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) also expressed deep concern and disappointment over the team’s performance in the ongoing World Cup 2023. In response, SLC has demanded an urgent and comprehensive explanation from the entire coaching staff and selectors.

“Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has expressed its deep concern and disappointment over the performance of the Sri Lanka National Team during the ongoing World Cup 2023, particularly the disappointing loss against India yesterday. In light of these concerns, SLC has called for an urgent and comprehensive explanation from the entire coaching staff and Selectors,” stated SLC in a statement.

The Kusal Mendis-led team were already eliminated from the marquee tournament. They are currently in eighth place in the 10-team points table. They are also on the verge of missing the Champions Trophy 2025, as only the top eight teams will qualify for the event.

Angelo Mathews, Shakib Al Hasan dismissal

Angelo Mathews’ brother, Trevin Mathews issued a warning to Shakib Al Hasan after the controversial dismissal of his brother. Trevin Mathews doesn’t want the Bangladeshi skipper to play any international matches or the Lanka Premier League (LPL) matches in Sri Lanka.

Angelo Mathews was timed out without facing a single ball against Bangladesh in Sri Lanka’s last match. Matthews couldn’t take guard within two minutes due to helmet issues. Bangladesh skipper appealed for a dismissal, and the onfield umpire ruled in his favor.

We Are Very Disappointed – Trevin Mathews

Trevin Mathews, who also played cricket at the club level, accused Shakib Al Hasan of a lack of sportsmanship in the gentleman’s game. Trevin stated that Shakib may face adverse reactions from the fans, including the possibility of being pelted with stones in Sri Lanka.

“We are very disappointed. Bangladeshi captain has no sportsman spirit and did not show humanity in the gentleman’s game,” said Trevin Mathews, as quoted by BDCricTime.com

We never expected this right from his captain to the rest of the team members. Shakib is not welcome in Sri Lanka. If he comes here to play any international or the LPL matches, stones will be thrown at him, or will have to face the annoyance of the fans,” he added.

“Angelo was within his crease in the stipulated time but it was not his fault when the strap of his helmet was broken.”

Angelo Mathews Wasn’t Ready To Receive The Ball – Fourth Umpire

In an interview with Ian Bishop, fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock stated that the two-minute period had already elapsed before Angelo Mathews’ helmet strap issue occurred.

“ICC World Cup playing conditions supersede the MCC laws of cricket. When it comes to the timed out, at the fall of a wicket, or even retirement of a batter, the incoming batter has to be in position and ready to receive the ball within two minutes, or his other partner to receive the ball in two minutes,” Holdstock said.

“We have certain protocols where the TV umpire at the fall of the wicket, monitors the two minutes. And he will then relay the message to the on-field umpires. And in the instance this afternoon, the batter wasn’t ready to receive the ball within those two minutes, even before the strap became an issue for him,” he added.

Wasim Akram on Sri Lanka Team

Former Pakistan Cricketer Wasim Akram feels that Sri Lanka didn’t do justice to the conditions by scoring a meager 279 on a batting-friendly track at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Bangladesh won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat first. In reply, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Perera in the very first over. Skipper Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka made a 61-run partnership for the second wicket but then lost their wickets in consecutive overs.

Sadeera Samarwickrama and Charith Asalanka added 63 runs for the fourth wicket but eventually, Sadeera was out in the 25th over and after that, Angelo Mathews was controversially timed out after he failed to take the guard within two minutes of Sadeera’s dismissal. Charith Asalanka went on to score a terrific hundred scoring 108 off 105 balls.

“They didn’t do justice to themselves, especially on this pitch, jo abhi tak World Cup k sabse zyada runs banane waali pitch hai. Sadeera was set on 41, wo koi jagah thhi out hone waali?” Akram questioned.

Watch: Wasim Akram Criticising Sri Lanka’s Batting Order

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 279 in the last over of their innings. Tanzim Hasan Shakib took three wickets and helped Bangladesh to restrict Sri Lanka to a total of 279. While chasing, Bangladesh lost their openers early but Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan stitched a match-winning partnership of 169 runs to take the Tigers close to the target of 280.

Wasim Akram also praised the Bangladesh players, especially Najmul Hossain Shanto and the skipper Shakib Al Hasan. Both of them were having a difficult time with the bat but they contributed in this grudge match against Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh were the first team to be officially eliminated from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 but a win for Sri Lanka would have ensured their life in the competition, although only mathematically as India and South Africa have already qualified for the Semi-Finals.

Sri Lanka will face New Zealand in their last match of the World Cup and it is going to be a dead rubber for them. However, from New Zealand’s point of view, it is an important match given that they are fighting for that Semi-final berth with Pakistan. If New Zealand wins against Sri Lanka, they will have an upper hand given their better NRR than Pakistan.

Sri Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe’s decision to dismiss the entire cricket board of the country has been quashed by Sri Lanka’s court of appeal. The decision has been made that all the expelled officials will be hereby restored pending a full hearing.

The decision follows a petition filed by the board’s president, Shammi Silva, who challenged the action taken by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, who had dissolved the Lankan Cricket Board and appointed an interim committee led by former captain Arjuna Ranatunga

According to the board officials, Shammi Silva is set to return to his role which is backed by a court order. this court order prevents the interim committee led by Arjuna Ranatunga from continuing to operate. Additionally, the Lankan government has established a cabinet committee in order to address the ‘outstanding issues’ within the Sri Lanka cricket board.

Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe’s decision to dissolve the entire cricket board came in the wake of a humiliating defeat by India at the World Cup where the Lankans was bundled for 55, losing the match by a huge margin of 302 runs. His decision was rooted in ongoing disputes within the Cricket Board, a board that is regarded as the wealthiest sports organization on the financially challenged island, and allegations of widespread corruption within the board.

Sri Lanka Cricket Is Plagued With Corruption

The head of the interim committee, Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga pledged to reform the Lankan Cricket Board. He wants to rebuild the national cricket team and wants to change the image of the ‘most corrupt institution of the country.’

The Court of Appeal’s decision has noteworthy implications for the future of cricket in the island nation. They will focus on addressing the administrative and governance issues that have plagued cricket in the country. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has been virtually eliminated from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 after suffering a defeat at the hands of Bangladesh.

The Lankans will face their last match against New Zealand, a win will not give them a semi-final spot but their win might benefit Pakistan as New Zealand will be stuck on eight points if they lose against Sri Lanka. Pakistan need to beat England in their last match of the round-robin league.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was disappointed with his controversial dismissal during the recent match against Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2023. Angelo Mathews shared video evidence to prove that he was ready to face the ball within two minutes.

Angelo Mathews became the first batter to be dismissed timed out in international cricket. The batter came to the crease after Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal. He reached the crease in time, but his helmet’s strap broke while he was adjusting it before facing the ball.

The 36-year-old asked for a replacement without consulting the on-field umpires. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan then appealed for a timed-out dismissal, and the umpire upheld the appeal. Mathews’s dismissal sparked a debate within the cricketing community.

Watch – Angelo Mathews Shares Video Evidence

Reflecting on his controversial dismissal, Angelo Mathews took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to defend his case. The veteran batter shared a video that clearly shows the batter reaching the crease and being ready to face the delivery before the helmet strap came off.

Angelo Mathews Wasn’t Ready Even Before Helmet Issue – Fourth Umpire

In an interview with Ian Bishop, fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock claimed that Angelo Mathews had already used up his two-minute limit before the helmet strap issue occurred. He explained that the incoming batter must be ready within two minutes.

Mathews’ dismissal put Sri Lanka in a difficult situation at 135/5. The Kusal Mendis-led team was bowled for a total of 279 runs after 49.3 overs. The Shakib Al Hasan-led side successfully chased down the target with seven wickets and 8.5 overs to spare in the innings.

Angelo Mathews succumbed to the most bizarre form of dismissal on Monday during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He was timed out as he failed to take his guard within two minutes of the previous dismissal and Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan didn’t miss the opportunity to appeal for this. Veteran Pakistan Cricketer Shoaib Malik however opposed Shakib’s action saying that if he was there in Shakib’s place, he would not have appealed for the same.

When Angelo Mathews came out to bat, his helmet strap was snapped as he was trying to adjust his helmet. He forgot to take his guard and asked for a new helmet but till then, Shakib figured out that he could initiate an appeal and get Mathews timed out.  “Shakib said that one of the fielders gave him the idea of time out. The fielder went to his captain when the strap of Mathews’s helmet snapped. Why did the fielder not do this within two minutes? Think about it,” Malik was quoted as saying on A Sports.

“Every captain has his own views, but if I was the captain, I would not have appealed. Helmet malfunction can happen to anyone,” Malik added.

Angelo Mathews Slams Shakib Al Hasan And The 4th Umpire

Angelo Mathews slammed Shakib Al Hasan and the Bangladesh team after the match and he was completely livid with the dismissal. He called their actions ‘disgraceful’ and said that he couldn’t believe that a team would stoop so low.

Mathews took to X and wrote, “The 4th umpire is wrong here! Video evidence shows I still had 5 more seconds even after the helmet gave away! Can the 4th umpire rectify this, please? I mean safety is paramount, as I just couldn’t face the bowler without a helmet.”

Angelo Mathews picked up two wickets in the match including one of Shakib Al Hasan but until then Shakib had incurred enough damage with his match-winning innings of 82 off 65 balls. Bangladesh won the match against Sri Lanka by three wickets while chasing a target of 280.

MCC issues statement on Angelo Mathews timed out

Angelo Mathews was timed out during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as he failed to take his guard within two minutes of the last dismissal. Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the wicket and he was given out as per the rules of the game which clearly states that an incoming batter must be in a position to take the guard or for their partner to be ready to receive the next ball within three minutes (2 minutes in ICC playing conditions) of the fall of the previous wicket. If the player fails to do so then the fielding team can make an appeal to the umpire and the batter can be declared ‘timed out’.

Former India opener, Aakash Chopra pointed out that Angelo Mathews was nowhere trying to gain an unfair advantage when he was ruled ‘timed out’ in the match. In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra opined that Mathews’ dismissal was slightly different from the much-debated run-out while backing up too early.

“Was it ethically and morally correct? I remember, I think it was Afghanistan’s game against Bangladesh, Mujeeb Ur Rahman forgot his abdominal guard, they didn’t make a timed-out appeal then, but they did it for Angelo Mathews. So it seemed slightly different, don’t know why,” he explained.

“The more important thing is should it be done? I always believe that if something is right as per law, how can it be ethically incorrect? I always say that when there is talk about the run-out at the non-striker’s end, but no one was trying to cheat or take unfair advantage here,” the former India opener added.

Angelo Mathews Became The First Player In ODIs To Be Timed Out

Angelo Mathews reached the crease five seconds before the stipulated time but while he was trying to tighten his helmet, he broke the strap and asked for another helmet. The thing is Mathews had still not taken his guard and that allowed Shakib Al Hasan to appeal the umpires for a wicket. Eventually, Angelo Mathews was given out and became the first player in ODI history to be timed out.

Aakash Chopra pointed out that if the strap had broken after Mathews faced a ball, no one could have appealed for the same. “The only thing was that there was a slight delay. If the delay is because of carelessness, then it’s absolutely wrong, I totally agree. However, if he had played that ball and then his helmet had broken, he could have changed his pads as well, no one would have said anything to him,” he said.

The reputed commentator emphasized that the umpires could have convinced Shakib to withdraw the appeal. “We didn’t give him a 15-second allowance but we are ready to give him 10 mins if he had played a ball, and there wouldn’t have been any penalty. So it is slightly problematic. I feel the umpires could have probably stepped in and told Shakib that what he was doing was wrong but no one said and no one heard,” he elaborated.

Angelo Mathews avenged this incident by taking Shakib’s wicket during Bangladesh’s innings. However, Shakib had done the damage by then as he scored a match-winning 82 off 65 deliveries and also won the Player of The Match Award.

Angelo Mathews held the most explosive press conference of his career where he tore apart Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan and the Bangladesh team. He called their actions ‘disgraceful’. Mathews said that he had never seen a team or a player stoop so low in his prolonged career of 15 years.
He added that if his helmet strap was broken against any other team then this situation would not have been entertained but since it broke against Bangladesh, it was unfortunate.
This scathing criticism from Angelo Mathews was in response to Shakib Al Hasan’s appeal which led to Angelo Mathews being ‘timed out’ and becoming the first player in ODI history to be timed out. Angelo Mathews was given timed out during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh, as he failed to take his guard within two minutes of the stipulated time. This meant that he was out without even playing a ball.
The ICC’s playing conditions law 40 suggests that the new batter must be ready to receive the ball within two minutes of a dismissal. Angelo Mathews’ helmet strap broke about one minute and 55 seconds after Samarawickrama’s catch was completed. Angelo Mathews hadn’t taken his guard yet and he was doing his final preparations to face Shakib.
“It was obviously disgraceful from Shakib and Bangladesh,” Mathews said. “If they want to take wickets like that and stoop down to that level, there’s something wrong, drastically.
“It’s a very disappointing way that Bangladesh played. If it was mankading or obstructing the field, there’s no issue. Within two minutes I was at the crease, and it was when I was at the crease that my helmet broke. The umpires saw this. I still had five seconds left. After I showed my helmet, the umpires said [Bangladesh] had appealed. So I asked where common sense was because my two minutes hadn’t passed.”
“I’ve got no words to explain it. In my 15 years of playing, I’ve never seen a team or a player stoop so low. Unfortunately [the strap breaking] happened against Bangladesh. I don’t think any other team would do that, because it was black and white. It was an equipment malfunction. It was a safety issue as well. We know that without a helmet I can’t face the bowling.”
When Shakib was questioned about this incident, he said that he had known Mathews from his under-19 days but he stressed the fact that ‘rules are rules’. Angelo Mathews said that his view of Shakib Al Hasan had changed in light of this ‘timed out’ controversy.
“Up to today, I had the utmost respect for him and the Bangladesh team,” Mathews said. “You all play to win. If it’s within the rules, it’s clearly fine. But in my incident today, within two minutes I was clearly there. We have video evidence and we’ll put out a statement later on – I’m not just coming and saying things here. I’m talking with proof. From the time the catch was taken to the time I walked into the crease I still had five seconds after breaking my helmet.”

Angelo Mathews Shares Proof That He Was On Time

The umpires asked Shakib Al Hasan to withdraw the appeal once Angelo Mathews explained the helmet situation to them. Shakib however, declined to withdraw the appeal and Angelo Mathews had to depart without facing a single ball.
“Yes, Shakib had the option of [withdrawing appeal]. He knew that this was not time-wasting and I was there within my time. I wasn’t trying to waste time or get an advantage.”
The Sri Lankan team refused to shake hands with the Bangladesh players after the match was over. Players from both teams exchanged tense words during the course of the match. Many players shook hands with the not-out batters of Bangladesh but they didn’t bother going to the Bangladesh dugout to shake hands with all the Bangladesh players.
You need to respect people who respect us,” Mathews said about the Sri Lankans not shaking hands with their opponents. “They have to respect the game itself. We all are ambassadors of this beautiful game, including the umpires. If you don’t respect and you don’t use your common sense, what more can you ask for?”
Angelo Mathews’ controversial wicket has raised a lot of questions about Shakib Al Hasan’s spirit of the game but he was abiding by the rules. While some might consider this unethical, it can’t be denied that the rules suggest that a batter needs to be on the crease taking his guard within two minutes of the previous dismissal.

MCC issues statement on Angelo Mathews timed out

The Sri Lanka Vs Bangladesh match produced a controversial moment when Angelo Mathews was declared timed out as he failed to take his crease before the required time. However, the spirit of the game is being questioned here as Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the wicket. This is the first instance in the history of ODI cricket where a batter was timed out.

Law 40 of the Laws of Cricket provides that an incoming batter must be in a position to take the guard or for their partner to be ready to receive the next ball within three minutes (2 minutes in ICC playing conditions) of the fall of the previous wicket. If the player fails to do so then the fielding team can make an appeal to the umpire and the batter can be declared ‘timed out’.

Angelo Mathews was coming onto bat at No. 6 after Sadeera Samarwickrama was out, according to the law the next batter is supposed to be on the crease in two minutes and Mathews was there ten seconds ahead, However, there was some issue with Mathews’ helmet and he signaled the dugout for another helmet and by the time he got his new helmet, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the wicket and somehow Angelo Mathews was timed out.

Angelo Mathews’ Sri Lanka Video Of Mankading Jos Buttler Is Being Surfaced

Talking about the spirit of the game, Angelo Mathews’ led the Sri Lankan team once Mankaded Jos Buttler and the video is being resurfaced for all the spirit of the game talks. In this case, Jos Buttler was initially given a warning by the bowler but when he again advanced from the crease, the bowler knocked off the bails and he was rendered out.

Shakib Al Hasan was asked twice by the umpire to withdraw the appeal but he refused to do so. Angelo Mathews also asked Shakib to withdraw the appeal to which Shakib said, “Look, Angelo, I know that it is very unfortunate but I am not withdrawing the appeal.” Shakib Al Hasan was told by a fielder that if he appealed now then Mathews would be out and he went for it.

Bangladesh has been already eliminated from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 but now they are fighting for a spot in the ICC Champions Trophy. They will face Australia in their last match of the World Cup and the Aussies will not go easy on them.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews questioned his controversial timed-out dismissal against Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. Mathews shared evidence to prove the fourth umpire was wrong, stating that he still had time even after the helmet issue.

Mathews faced a delay of over two minutes in taking his first ball due to helmet issues. Bangladesh skipper Shakib appealed for a timed-out dismissal, which the on-field umpire upheld. Batters are required to be ready to complete their preparations within two minutes.

Fourth Umpire Is Wrong Here – Angelo Mathews

In response to an ICC post, Angelo Mathews defended his case, saying that the fourth umpire was wrong. Matthews shared two images with timings, highlighting the moment of the catch and when the helmet strap came off to support his argument.

“4th umpire is wrong here! Video evidence shows I still had 5 more seconds even after the helmet gave away! Can the 4th umpire rectify this please? I mean safety is paramount as I just couldn’t face the bowler without a helmet,” Mathews posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“Proof! From the time catch was taken and the time helmet strap coming off,” he wrote in another response.

We Have Video Evidence – Angelo Mathews

In the post-match press conference, Mathews stated that he had evidence to show that he still had five seconds left after the catch was taken, despite his helmet strap breaking. He emphasized the importance of player safety, suggesting it was an equipment malfunction.

“Within two minutes I was there. We have video evidence. We will put out a statement later on. We have video evidence, footage, and everything was looked at. I’m not just coming and saying things here. I’m talking with proof,” Mathews said.

“So, we have the video evidence where from the time the catch was taken, and then from the time I walked into the crease, I still had five seconds after breaking my helmet. So, we talk about safety of the players – you guys tell me if It’s right for me to take my guard without my helmet on? It’s just pure common sense,” he added.

“That’s why I think the umpires also had a bigger job at the time, because they could have at least gone back and checked. So, we talk about player safety. And a wicketkeeper for the spinner is not – they don’t let him keep without his helmet. So how can I take my guard without my helmet? It’s a complete equipment malfunction.”

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir expressed disappointment over Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews’ controversial dismissal during the 38th match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6.

Angelo Mathews made an unusual exit when he became the first batter in international cricket to be dismissed timed out. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed-out wicket and stood by his decision despite the request from Mathews on the field.

The 36-year-old came to bat during the 25th over of the Sri Lankan innings after Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal. However, he had to request a new helmet due to a broken strap. Umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth ruled him out, following the rules.

Absolutely Pathetic What Happened – Gautam Gambhir

Following Angelo Mathews’ dismissal against Bangladesh, Gautam Gambhir took to his social media handle to express his disappointment and described the incident as ‘absolutely pathetic’.

“Absolutely pathetic what happened in Delhi today! #AngeloMathews” Gautam Gambhir posted on X (formerly Twitter).

According to article 40.1.1 of the ICC playing conditions for the 2023 World Cup, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within two minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

Article 40.1.2 says: “In the event of an extended delay in which no batter comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (ICC Match referee awarding a match). For the purposes of that clause the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the two minutes referred to above.”

Sri Lanka was bowled out for 279 runs in 49.3 overs. Charith Asalanka was the top performer, scoring 108 runs off 105 balls. The Shakib Al Hasan-led team chased the target with seven wickets in hand in 41.1 overs, securing their second win in the World Cup.

Angelo Mathews, Shakib Al Hasan dismissal

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has justified his decision to appeal for Angelo Mathews’ wicket during the game against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday (November 6). The World Cup clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh was marred by Mathews’ controversial dismissal.

Mathews became the first player to be timed out in international cricket after failing to be ready to face the first ball within two minutes. While he managed to arrive at the crease in time, a broken chinstrap in the helmet meant he was not ready to face his first ball. As Mathews asked for a new helmet, Shakib Al Hasan appealed for his wicket and the umpires adjudged the Sri Lanka allrounder out.

Shakib Al Hasan justifies appeal:

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Shakib Al Hasan justified his appeal against Mathews and also revealed how things unfolded during the incident. The Bangladesh captain revealed that one of his teammates asked him to appeal and he did not hesitate. The on-field umpires also asked him to reconsider his decision but he did not withdraw his appeal and Mathews had to walk back.

“One of our fielders came to me and said if you appeal now he’ll be out. Then I appealed and the umpires asked me if I’m serious or whether I am going to take it back. It’s in the laws,” said Shakib Al Hasan.

“I don’t know if it’s right or wrong. I was at war and I had to take a decision to make sure my team wins. Right or wrong, there will be debates but if it is in the rules I don’t mind taking those chances,” he added.

As far as the match was concerned, Shakib Al Hasan led his team from the very front and guided them to a hard-fought 3-wicket win. Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka were all out for 279 with Charith Asalanka scoring a century. In reply, Bangladesh crossed the finishing line in the 42nd over. Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 90 while Shakib Al Hasan scored 82 for their side.

Kusal Mendis

Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis has expressed his disappointment over umpire’s role in Angelo Mathews‘ controversial dismissal during the World Cup clash against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday (November 6).

Angelo Mathews was adjudged timed out for failing to be ready to face the ball in time after arriving at the crease. He walked out to bat in the 25th over and as he prepared to take guard, he found the strap of his helmet broken. The former Sri Lanka skipper removed the helmet and asked for another one from the dressing room.

The rule states that a new batsman should be ready to face the ball within two minutes. And as Mathews was waiting for his teammate to bring him a new helmet, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed out. The umpires had no option but to adjudge the allrounder out. Mathews had a heated argument with Shakib as well as the on-field umpires but it did not make much of a difference as he had to walk off.

Kusal Mendis on Angelo Mathews’ dismissal:

Speaking at the end of the game, Kusal Mendis was asked about the controversial dismissal. In reply, the Sri Lanka spinner did not shy away from expressing his disappointment and stated that there were still 5 seconds left when he realised that the strap of his helmet was broken.

“It’s very disappointing – when Angelo came to the crease, there were 5 second left. Then he found out strap of the helmet came off. It’s disappointing umpires couldn’t step in and make correct decision,” said Kusal Mendis.

The on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Marais Erasmus had a tough day at the job during the 38th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 between Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh National Cricket Team and Kusal Mendis-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6.

There were multiple verbal fights during the match and a controversial dismissal of Angelo Mathews that ignited the spirit of cricket debate among cricket fans and experts.

After a couple of one-on-one fights, there was a fight involving multiple players after the 38th over of the second innings. Sri Lanka players Charith Asalanka and Charith Asalanka were engaged in a heated exchange with Bangladesh batsman Towhid Hridoy. Marais Erasmus was forced to step in to separate the players before the things got more bad and heated.

In the end, Bangladesh won the match by 3 wickets to eliminate Sri Lanka from the semi-finals race. Notably, the Bangla Tigers were already out of the competition.

Shakib Al Hasan won the Player of the Match for his all-round heroics and speaking after the match, he said that they bowled really well in the match. He said:

“They are two important players (Mendis and Samarawickrama), lucky to get those two wickets. There wasn’t much for the bowlers, we bowled really well upfront. Spinners kept it tight. Both the spinners bowled really well. Bowling wins us more matches, fast bowlers were bowling really well up to the World Cup.”

Shakib Al Hasan further said that they weren’t able to perform up to the expectations in the World Cup, but were happy with their performance against the Lankan Lions.

“We couldn’t live up to our expectations but we knew that we can fight back, we had that mentality. We kept on believing and we kept on coming back and today it paid off,” Shakib Al Hasan said.

“The ground dimension helped as well, the shorter boundary, there was a lot of pace on the ball, so I just had to use the pace, luckily it came off and from there on I never looked back. (Best performance came a little late?) I’d agree with that, we could have been consistent, that’s one disappointment,” Shakib Al Hasan stated.

In what could be labeled as shocking scenes, the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team and Bangladesh National Cricket Team players avoided the customary post-match handshakes after the 38th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6.

The match between the Asian giants was filled with a lot of drama and verbal spats. The players of both teams were extremely charged up and made the job difficult for the on-field umpires.

The reason behind things not being well between the teams was the controversial dismissal of Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews. The veteran player was declared timed out after Shakib Al Hasan’s appeal and it ignited the spirit of cricket debate.

Angelo Mathews faced some issues with his helmet due to which there was some delay in his readiness to face the bowler. The Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan had the opportunity to withdraw the appeal, but he refused to do that.

In the end, Bangladesh won the match by 3 wickets and many would have felt that it was finally the end of the dramas, but that wasn’t the case as the players decided to avoid the post-match handshakes, which is a tradition.

When asked about not shaking hands with Bangladesh players at the post-match press conference, the veteran Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews said “We’ll respect them if they respect us.”

Talking about his dismissal, Angelo Mathews said that Shakib Al Hasan disrespected him and the game by not withdrawing his appeal. He added that the incident has led to him losing all the respect he had for the Bangladesh captain. He said:

“It was disrespect from Shakib Al Hasan and Bangladesh. If they want to play cricket like that, there is something wrong drastically. So disrespectful. I had a lot of respect for Shakib but he lost all now. We have video evidence we will put it out later”.

Maheesh Theekshana tried to stretch the game against Bangladesh as long as he could in the ICC World Cup 2023. The match 38th of the tournament took place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium between Sri Lanka and the Shakib Al Hasan-led side.

In the chase of 280 runs, Bangladesh were placed pretty well with 210/2. However, after that, Sri Lanka pulled things drastically well. They picked wickets in quick succession of time and made the match out of nothing.

Maheesh Theekshana too was part of it as he removed in form Mahmudullah. The spinner bowled a stupendous delivery. He fired a yorker at the base of off stump. The batter was late on it and the ball sneaked through. Here’s the video:

Mahmudullah scored 22 runs off 23 balls. After his wicket, Maheesh Theekshana chipped in once again as he removed Mehidy Hasan Miraz as well and put immense pressure on Sri Lanka.

Maheesh Theekshana bowled a full delivery around off stump. Mehidy Hasan cleared his front leg and lofted it down the ground but was caught. The batter managed just 3 runs. The bowler returned with the figures of 2/44.

However, his efforts went in vain as Bangladesh won the game by 3 wickets. Towhid Hridoy (15*) hit some lusty blows in the end and won the game for his team to keep their hopes alive to qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025.

BAN vs SL: In the future, we’ll have a good team – Kusal Mendis after Sri Lanka get eliminated from the tournament

Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis talked about the loss his side suffered against Bangladesh. He admitted that they missed the services of key players in the tournament and they also played bad cricket. Speaking at the post-match presentation, he explained:

“Charith played a brilliant knock. But we were 30-40 runs short. Happy that some good young players coming through, and happy we have shown some promise in this tournament. In the future we’ll have a good team. We had injuries to main players, also did some mistakes. Had we played better cricket, we would’ve had a better chance. It’s very disappointing.”

Sri Lanka will play their last league match against New Zealand. The game will take place on Thursday (9th November).

BAN vs SL: The 38th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 took place between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The Kusal Mendis-led side were eliminated from the tournament after they suffered a disappointing 3-wicket loss.

Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka were off to a poor start as they lost Kusal Perera (4) in the first over and then skipper Kusal Mendis (19). After that, Pathum Nissanka (41) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (42) stabilized the innings with their handy contributions.

The duo failed to carry on and lost wickets after good starts. But the real blitz came from the bat of Charith Asalanka (108). He slammed a vital century whereas Dhananjaya de Silva (34) played valuable hands as Sri Lanka ended with a fighting total of 279 runs. For Bangladesh, Tanzim Sakib picked three wickets.

Bangladesh too didn’t have a good start as they lost Tanzid Hasan (9) and Litton Das (22) early. But Najmul Hossain Shanto (90) and Shakib Al Hasan (82) batted staggeringly well and outplayed the opposition. It looked as if they would easily win the game but Sri Lanka pulled things back.

They removed quick wickets and left them tottering at 255/6. But Towhid Hridoy (15*) hit some lusty blows in the end and won the game for his team by 3 wickets.

The veteran Sri Lanka National Cricket Team all-rounder Angelo Mathews gave an epic “time to go” send-off to Bangladesh National Cricket Team captain Shakib Al Hasan in the 38th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6

Mathews was left fuming at the Bangladesh skipper after his controversial dismissal in the first innings of the match. Notably, the Sri Lanka all-rounder became the first player in the history of the game to get timed out.

Mathews expressed his anger on Shakib from the moment the Bangladesh skipper stepped onto the field to bat. As Shakib was coming in to bat after the dismissal of Litton Das, he passed some comments on the left-handed batter.

He came close to dismissing Shakib on the third ball of the 11th over but Charith Asalanka dropped a catch at short cover. However, the Sri Lanka all-rounder kept bowling well and eventually won the battle by dismissing Shakib Al Hasan.

On the first ball of the 32nd over, Angelo Mathews bowled a 121.8kph off-cutter to Shakib Al Hasan. The Bangladesh captain only managed to get a leading edge and Asalanka moved to his left from shortish extra cover and put in a dive to complete the catch.

As Shakib Al Hasan was going back to the pavilion, Angelo Mathews gave him an epic send-off by pointing towards his wrist and gesturing it was “time to go”.

Ian Bishop has made a shocking revelation about the timed out dismissal of the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team all-rounder Angelo Mathews in the 38th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh National Cricket Team at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6.

A controversial incident happened during the BAN vs SL clash, which ignited the ‘spirit of cricket’ debate. The veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews came to bat after the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama and he was declared timed out by the on-field umpires.

The all-rounder had faced some issues with his helmet after coming out in the middle and he soon called a substitute fielder with a new helmet. The umpires weren’t impressed with the time being wasted and they approached Angelo Mathews and had a chat with him.

That was when Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan decided to appeal for timed out. After a lengthy discussion, the umpires declared the all-rounder out and he was told to go back to the pavilion.

However, Angelo Mathews looked frustrated and he told the umpires as well as Shakib Al Hasan that there were some issues with his helmet. However, the Bangladesh captain didn’t withdraw his appeal. The all-rounder was out without facing any delivery in the match and this was the first instance of a batsman getting timed out in the history of international cricket.

Shakib Al Hasan Was Approached By Umpires Twice To Withdraw His Timed Out Appeal – Ian Bishop on Angelo Mathews’ Dismissal

While doing commentary, Ian Bishop made a shocking revelation about the things that happened in the middle. He revealed that the Bangladesh skipper was approached twice by the on-field umpires and they asked him whether he wanted to withdraw his appeal.

Ian Bishop added that the Bangladesh National Cricket Team didn’t listen to umpires and refused to withdraw his appeal.

“The umpires approached Shakib twice to see if he wanted to withdraw the appeal, and he said no. Twice,” said Ian Bishop on air.

According to the rules in place in the ongoing edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup, a batsman needs to arrive in the crease within 2 minutes after the dismissal of a batter and they need to be ready to face the bowler. If the batter doesn’t meet the requirements, he should be declared out by the umpires.

The Timed Out rules state: “40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
