  • Shubman Gill scored 23 runs against South Africa

  • Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma added 62 runs for opening

Shubman Gill didn’t have a great outing in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 game against South Africa. The Indian batter couldn’t convert the start he got in match 37 of the tournament at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

India won the toss and opted to bat first. Skipper Rohit Sharma (40) took the team off the flier and he along with Shubman Gill added 62 runs for the opening partnership and put the opposition team under pressure. After the captain got out, it was expected that the youngster would carry his bat and play big innings.

However, this wasn’t the case as he was castled by Keshav Maharaj. The South Africa spinner stunned Shubman Gill will a peach of a delivery and it’s fair to say that any batter would’ve gotten out on that delivery. He bowled a tossed-up slower ball that drifted in from the outside leg.

Shubman Gill was dragged forward and the ball ripped past the outside edge. It beat the batter in the flight, dipped, turned, and then went on to hit the top of the off-stump. Here’s the video:

Shubman Gill played some blistering strokes in his innings and looked in great touch. However, couldn’t carry on to the start that he got. The batter managed 23 runs off 24 balls. He smashed 4 boundaries and one six in his innings.

IND vs SA: Onus on Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer to take to the big total after the dismissal of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill

Both the openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill did their job to some extent. They gave a rollicking start to the team. After the wickets, the onus will now be on birthday boy Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer to take the team to the big total.

Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer are batting well and are making sure that they tick the scoreboard as well. They have added over 40 runs for the partnership. The duo would be hoping to carry on and lay the platform for the power hitters to end the innings on high.
