South Africa star pacer Lungi Ngidi was forced to leave the field in the ongoing South Africa Vs Afghanistan match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. While bowling the third ball of his third over in the match, Lungi Ngidi was seen wincing in pain holding his left ankle after the follow-through was completed. The umpires had a quick look at the danger zone of the pitch where Lungi was running close during his follow-through.

Lungi Ngidi’s left ankle/Achilles tendon gave him some trouble during South Africa’s game against India too and once again it left him in pain against Afghanistan. The physio was quick to attend him and after a quick examination, he was escorted out of the ground by the physio. Lungi Ngidi walking off the field right before the semi-finals is definitely not a good sign for South Africa, given he is an experienced pace bowler for the team.

As Lungi Ngidi was walking off he was looking very tensed and emotional. South Africa fans and the team can only hope that the injury is not as serious as it looks. Ngidi was having a decent campaign at the World Cup with eight wickets to his name in eight matches and the whole team would want him to continue in this tournament.

Aiden Markram Completes Lungi Ngidi’s Over

Aiden Markram was quick to grab the ball and complete Lungi Ngidi’s over as three balls were still left when Ngidi got injured. Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first against South Africa on a batting-friendly Ahmedabad track. They had a solid start with the bat but the Proteas will be concerned about Lungi Ngidi’s injury as it was not looking good.

South Africa has already qualified for the semi-finals of the World Cup. They will face Australia in the semi-finals at the historic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata on the 16th of November. Meanwhile, an injury right before the semi-finals will raise a few concerns in the team’s dressing room but they can bounce back with the kind of reserves and bench strength they have.

South Africa would like to win this game against Afghanistan to keep the momentum for their side going into the semi-finals. They recently tasted defeat against India by a huge margin and they would not want that kind of negative momentum while facing Australia in the semi-finals.
