England skipper Jos Buttler scored 27 off 18 balls in the match against Pakistan in Kolkata. His bright innings was cut short by a direct hit from a Pakistan Pacer Haris Rauf who hit the bull’s eye from short third man.

Buttler came into bat at number five after the fall of Ben Stokes’ wicket who was dismissed for 84 as he looked set to score back-to-back tons. Coming into bat in the 41st over, Buttler had to ensure that he kept the scoring rate going for his side.

The England skipper scored quickly trying to keep up with the net run rate. However, he was dismissed in the 48th over of the game trying to run a quick single. Mohammad Wasim bowled an inswinging yorker that thudded into his pads and went only as far as Haris Rauf at short third man. He picked up the ball and hit the stumps directly to catch Buttler short. He was thus dismissed for 27 off 18 balls.

That was Buttler’s last innings of this World Cup. He endured a forgetful World Cup campaign scoring just 138 runs in nine games at an average of 15.33 with a best of 43. He needed 66 before this innings to get to 5000 ODI runs but he could not get there.

England posted 337/9 after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Ben Stokes led the charge with his 84 off 76 balls. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root scored fifties and a lovely cameo from Harry Brook (30 off 17 balls) took England to that score.

After the game, Bairstow spoke about the wicket and how it played. He credited the Pakistani bowlers for bowling well upfront and then said that the England batters cashed in.

“You saw early on there was a bit on it for the bowlers. There are some sparse green patches, they bowled well upfront. Been able to assess the pitch, the ball was doing early on, tried to capitalise when given the opportunity to. It is a strong performance from the boys, everyone contributed well. It is a lovely way to finish the World Cup with the bat. Hopefully, we can go out and defend this total” Bairstow said to Star Sports.
