Former South African cricketer Morne Morkel has stepped down as the bowling coach of the Pakistan Cricket Team. This comes after Men in Green had a horrible campaign in the ICC World Cup 2023, where they managed just 4 wins out of 9 games.

Morne Morkel joined Pakistan Cricket Team on a six-month contract in June this year but despite one month remaining, he gave his resignation. The former Proteas pacer had a decent stint with the team as under him Pakistan won the Test series against Sri Lanka and also reached the Super Four stage of the tournament.

This will come as a huge setback for Pakistan as they are next lined to face Australia in the three-match series. Various reports have suggested that PCB might rope in Umar Gul as the new fast-bowling coach. They are likely to make the announcement soon.

Morne Morkel was expected to play a huge role for the team in the ICC World Cup 2023. But he was an utter disappointment as bowlers failed drastically in the team. The biggest reason for the team’s failure was their bowling. They couldn’t take wickets at regular intervals and hence conceded a lot of runs.

Pakistan started the tournament highly as they won back-to-back games. But after that, they faced thrashing losses against India, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa, which dented their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. After that, they won two games but their chances were diminished.

A bit of a mixed bag to be honest – Morne Morkel on Pakistan’s campaign in World Cup 2023

Morne Morkel talked about Pakistan’s campaign in the World Cup 2023. He admitted that they wanted to finish at the top but things didn’t reach their way. He explained:

“A bit of mixed bag to be honest. We are standing in the fifth position. Coming into the World Cup, the dream was to finish at the top and at least reach the semis. With the ball and bat, we have been soft in certain situations. There were plenty of things we can point fingers at.”

It remains to be seen who will replace Morne Morkel as the fast-bowling coach of the team.
