Shoaib Malik has shown interest in being part of Pakistan’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The former Pakistan skipper last played international cricket back in November 2021 against Bangladesh. Shoaib Malik has over 2400 runs in T20 internationals and he wishes to break Chris Gayle’s record of scoring most runs in T20 cricket.

Pakistan had a terrible outing in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they finished fifth in the points table with only four wins to their name in nine matches. They lost four consecutive matches in a World Cup event for the first time in history. Shoaib Malik was one of the experts who criticized Pakistan’s performance in the World Cup and showed interest in taking part in the upcoming T20 World Cup in June 2024.

Shoaib Malik, however, stated that he is not just playing cricket for taking part in the T20 World Cup. He said that he is playing cricket with great passion and because he is enjoying it and because he can play it. Malik stated that if he is given clarity, he will consider playing in the World Cup in 2024.

“I am playing Cricket with great passion and my goal is to become the best batter in the world and break Chris Gayle’s record with around 2000 runs more to go. I have no issues with my physical fitness. If I am given clarity, I will definitely consider it but I am not playing cricket because I want to play the 2024 World Cup. I am playing cricket because I enjoy it and I can play,” said Shoaib Malik.

Pakistan is currently ranked fifth in the ICC rankings for T20, and were the finalists in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022. They will definitely benefit from the experience of Shoaib Malik in the 2024 T20 World Cup. It is not a new thing for Pakistan cricketers to be back in the international team after a span of two or three years.

Shoaib Malik, who will turn 41 in February, has already announced his retirement from tests and ODIs. However, the  batting all-rounder has still not given up the shortest format and is eyeing a return in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
