Former Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir has proposed three potential leaders for the national team who could succeed Babar Azam across different formats. Amir emphasized the need for strategic changes in leadership to enhance Pakistan’s overall performance.
Babar Azam came under scrutiny following the Pakistan team’s disappointing performances in the 2023 World Cup. The cricket team failed to advance to the semi-finals for the third consecutive edition, securing just four wins out of nine matches in the tournament.
Imad Wasim Should Lead Pakistan In T20I Format – Mohammad Amir
In a recent World Cup special show on a local media channel, Mohammad Amir proposed a split captaincy for the Pakistan cricket team. Amir recommended appointing Imad Wasim as the T20I captain, especially with the T20 World Cup approaching.
“For the T20I format, with the T20 World Cup on the horizon and a series of T20 matches and a Test series against Australia lined up before the mega-event, I pick Imad Wasim,” Mohammad Amir said.
Imad Wasim staged a comeback to Pakistan’s shorter format against Afghanistan in April. However, he hasn’t been part of the ODI squad since November 2020. He wasn’t picked in the squad for the World Cup, as Mohammed Nawaz was preferred over him.
Shan Masood Can Be A Very Good Option For ODIs – Mohammad Amir
Mohammad Amir recommended Shan Masood for ODI captaincy and proposed the return of Sarfaraz Ahmed as Test captain. The former pacer suggested a youngster should be picked as vice-captain in red-ball cricket.
“In ODI, if you want to change regime then Shan Masood can be a very good option,” Amir further stated.
“If you want to prepare any youngster for Test captaincy, Sarfaraz still has 2 years left in cricket, so appoint him as the captain along with a youngster as vice-captain,” he concluded.
The upcoming challenge for the team involves a three-match Test series against Australia in away conditions, followed by a five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Babar is unlikely to lead the team in the white ball series, but he could lead the team in Tests.
