Former Pakistan Cricketer Sikander Bakht lashed out at 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev for supporting Babar Azam after speculations to sack Babar from his position as the captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team rose. Sikander Bakht talked about how India changed Virat Kohli after India crashed out at the 2021 T20 World Cup in the group stage.

Pakistan had a terrible outing in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they again failed to qualify for the semi-finals. The Men In Green under the leadership of Babar Azam, lost four consecutive matches for the first time in World Cup history which included defeats against India, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa. After losing their last league match against England, they ended their campaign with just four wins to their name out of nine matches.

Babar Azam has faced a lot of criticism from fans and pundits alike, for his poor performance as a batter and as a captain. He scored 320 runs in 9 matches with an average of 40.0. It was 154 runs less than his debut World Cup campaign in 2019.

Sikander Bakht lashed out at Kapil Dev saying “My brother Kapil Dev, you changed Virat Kohli after he lost against Pakistan, which means if India does this, it is right and if we do it, we talk about changing things then why they have a problem? Didn’t they (India) change Sachin and Virat? In the last five years, they have changed two captains. Why? because it did not look like they were captain materials.”

Babar Azam is set to meet PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf in order to discuss his future as the captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team. It is highly speculated that Babar will be stepping down as captain and he will be replaced by Shan Masood in the red-ball format and Shaheen Shah Afridi will be leading in T20s. As far as ODIs are concerned, PCB will reveal the names soon for Babar’s replacement as captain.

Babar Azam was made the limited-overs captain in 2019 and test captain in 2021. During his stint, Pakistan became the No.1 T20I side and No.1 ODI side but he failed to win any multi-nation tournament as Pakistan’s skipper. He may be leaving Pakistan’s captaincy but he will always be a leadership figure in the team and will be leading Pakistan’s batting.
