NZ vs SL: Trent Boult Breaks Wasim Akram’s And Glenn McGrath’s Record, Joins Elite List

New Zealand pacer Trent Boult became the third fastest bowler to take 50 wickets in the history of the ICC World Cup. He joined the likes of Mitchell Starc and Lasith Malinga, surpassing Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath, and Mutiah Muralitharan. 

Trent Boult took just 28 innings to take 50 wickets in the World Cup. He achieved the feat in the ongoing match 41 of the ICC World Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka. The do-or-die clash for the Kiwis is taking place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. 

New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. Trent Boult exhibited his class and bowled exceptional lines and lengths. He troubled Sri Lankan batters and picked up three wickets in no time. The fast bowler first removed Kusal Mendis and then in his next over picked two wickets, removing Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka. He is also only the third New Zealand bowler with 600 international wickets. 

Trent Boult set the tone for his side in the crucial. The Black Caps need to win this game to keep themselves in contention for the semi-final. A win here will make their case very strong but if they lose they might have to face the unfortunate exit from the tournament. 

Apart from Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson have picked one wicket each whereas Mitchell Santner has bagged two scalps.. New Zealand would be hoping to pick wickets early and win the match by a big margin to keep their NRR superior.

Mitchell Starc is the fastest bowler to 50 wickets in the ICC World Cups. He took just 19 innings to achieve the feat. He is followed by Lasith Malinga, who took just 25 innings to bag 50 wickets in the tournament. Trent Boult is at the 3 whereas Glenn Mcgrath took 30 innings. Mutiah Muralitharan and Wasim Akram also feature in the list.
