After completion of the ODI series against the hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE), the visitors Ireland are now preparing to handle Afghanistan in this same tour for the crucial ODI series.

It will be a three-match ODI series. Though initially this ODI series was scheduled to run between 18th and 23rd January 2021, the starting of this series has been delayed due to the visa issues and a ten-day quarantine period in place in the UAE. According to the reschedule, this Afghan vs Ireland ODI series will run from 21st January to 26th January 2021.

This ODI series will be a part of the 2020–23 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. While the Afghans will begin their journey in the inaugural ICC Cricket World Cup Super League with this ODI series, Ireland will play their second ODI series in this crucial Super League.

This ODI series will be Afghan’s first international cricket assignment since March 2020. Their last international match was also against Ireland during the Greater Noida T20I on 10th March 2020, where Ireland claimed a Super Over victory.

Meanwhile, during this ODI series against Afghans, Ireland will play their second international series in this new calendar year. In this ongoing tour, they just completed the 4-match ODI series against the home team UAE. While the middle two matches were cancelled due to COVID-19 health concerns, this ODI series ended with the 1-1 level.

Match Abandoned due to ‘Unfit’ pitch

  • If a match is abandoned and the pitch and/or outfield is ultimately rated as ‘Unfit’ under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, points for that match shall be distributed on the basis that the visiting team won the match and the home team lost the match, superseding any result that may have been derived under the DLS method. However, any such match shall be classified as a No Result for statistical purposes. (As per Contents 16.11.2 of ICC Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions)

Penalty Overs – Points Deduction

  • Any team which has been unable to maintain the minimum over rate as defined in clause 12.9 shall incur one Penalty Over for each full over it is short of the minimum over rate requirement. (As per Contents 16.12.1 of ICC Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions)
  • A team shall have one (1) CWC Super League competition point deducted from its points total for each Penalty Over it incurs. (As per Contents 16.12.2 of ICC Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions)

6th January 2021: Pacer David Delany ruled out from the complete UAE tour due to knee pain during training in Abu Dhabi. He soon returned to the home.

11th January 2021: All-rounder Shane Getkate has been added in the squad as a replacement for David Delany. Meanwhile, uncapped pacer Conor Olphert has been added in the squad only as a net bowler.
