“The three-match ODI series between Ireland Men and Bangladesh Men are the last fixtures in the ICC World Cup Super League and offers Ireland a potential automatic qualification spot in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 if the Men in Green can win all three matches. According to ESPNcricinfo, Josh Little is expected to leave for the ODI series on May 5th, missing the matches against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Craig Young has returned to the 14-man roster after a lengthy injury absence. Due to a reoccurring injury, the 32-year-old seamer was ruled out of the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup, but he will be available for the vital ODI series. Due to examination/work commitments, Conor Olphert, Matthew Humphreys, and Ross Adair will be unavailable.

“The senior squad has a more familiar look, with much of the squad has been part of the set-up in Zimbabwe (January) and Bangladesh (March) ODI fixtures. We do, however, welcome Craig Young back into the senior side after his long journey of recovery from injury,” Andrew White, National Men’s Selector said in an official statement released by Ireland Cricket.

“We are pleased to also have the services of Josh Little, who has been playing in the IPL over the last month. After a tough tour to Bangladesh last month, the lads will be keen to show their talent and skills in more familiar conditions – and with potential world cup qualification on the line, they will need no additional motivation to succeed,” he added.

Ireland’s cricket team will receive a significant boost with the inclusion of opener Paul Stirling in their squad for the second Test of the Sri Lanka tour. Paul Stirling had returned home after Ireland’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh, but has been added to the squad for the upcoming Test series following changes to the original schedule.

Initially, the tour was supposed to comprise a single Test and two ODIs. However, the limited-overs fixtures were later abandoned to make room for an additional Test. As a result, Paul Stirling will now be available for selection in the 15-member squad for the second Test, which is scheduled to begin on April 16th. Both Test matches will take place in Galle.

IPL 2023 | Dream11 Prediction | Fantasy Cricket Tips | Cricket Match Prediction Today | Cricket News | Cricket Live Score

Paul Stirling is a vital player for Ireland, having played in 145 ODIs and 124 T20Is for his country. He has also featured in 3 Test matches and is considered to be one of the most important members of Ireland’s batting line-up. His inclusion in the squad will give the team a much-needed boost and enhance their chances of a strong showing in the Test series against Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka tour will be a stern test for Ireland, as they have only won one of their eleven previous Test matches. However, with the likes of Stirling in their ranks, they will be hopeful of putting up a competitive performance and achieving a positive result in the upcoming Test series.

Paul Stirling Set To Shift Focus To Red-Ball Cricket

According to Andrew White, the national selector at Cricket Ireland, Paul Stirling initially intended to join the squad in Sri Lanka for the ODI series. However, due to changes in the schedule that saw the limited-overs fixtures canceled and replaced with an additional Test match, Stirling will now be included in the Test squad for the second Test match against Sri Lanka.

White stated that Paul Stirling’s focus will now shift towards red-ball cricket, with the postponed Bangladesh T20I series providing him with more time to prepare for the upcoming Test series. Despite missing out on the one-off Test match against Bangladesh in Dhaka starting on 4th April, Stirling’s inclusion in the Test squad against Sri Lanka will be a significant boost for Ireland.

Ireland seamer Curtis Campher did the unthinkable of picking four wickets in four balls against the Netherlands in the World Cup qualifiers — and he is hoping to produce lot more performances. Ireland put up a complete performance against the Netherlands after having them dismissed for just 106 in their first innings. Campher was the pick of the bowlers as he finished with four for 26 in his spell.

Ireland chased down the target in just 15.1 overs to win the game by 7 wickets, and Curtis Campher picked up the player of the match award for his brilliant double hat-trick. Not many bowlers in the world have been able to pick up four wickets in four balls, and Campher has now joined the elite list.

Curtis Campher Explains His Bowling Plans That Worked

Curtis Campher mentioned that he wasn’t thinking of achieving any feat and instead concentrated on the game plan against Ryan Ten Doeschate. He picked up the wickets of Colin Ackermann, Ryan Ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards, and Roelof Van Der Merve in consecutive deliveries on his debut game in the T20 World cup.

“To be honest, I wasn’t really thinking about it [emulating Malinga and Rashid], “Maybe it will set in a little bit later, but I’m just trying to do what I want to do – when Tendo walked in, we knew we had to go straight to him, and that worked and then just carried on to Edwards too,” Curtis Campher told at the post-match conference.

Curtis Campher Feels He Will Need To Keep Improving

Curtis Campher mentioned that the analyst suggested the plan of attacking the stumps and reckoned that it will not be a matter of time since he starts forgetting the dream spell. He added that he was delighted to end up on the winning side at the end.

“Both those [attacking the stumps] were plans worked out from the analyst, and that kind of fit into my game, so maybe in a few hours or a few days, it might rub off. But to be honest, I’m just happy with the win, and that’s all that matters,” he added.

Ireland has a big game coming up against Sri Lanka tomorrow night in the T20 World Cup 2021 qualifiers.

T20 World Cup 2021: Watch - Ireland's Curtis Campher Creates History By Taking 4 Wickets In 4 Balls vs Netherlands

Ireland medium-pacer Curtis Campher entered record books on Monday as he became the first bowler to take 4 wickets in 4 balls in a T20 World Cup game. He achieved this extraordinary feat against Netherlands in their Round 1 encounter in Abu Dhabi.

Bowling his second over of the innings, and Netherlands’ 10th, Curtis Campher rattled the opposition’s middle-order with four consecutive strikes, as Netherlands slipped from 51/2 to 51/6.

On the second ball of the over, Campher accounted for the wicket of Colin Ackermann. Caught by the keeper down the leg side, Ackermann was initially given not out by the on-field umpire, who then had to change his decision after Ireland took the review.

On the next ball, senior batsman Ryan ten Doeschate was trapped lbw by Campher for a golden duck. Doeschate didn’t bother to review as he knew he was plumb.

Campher completed his hat-trick with the wicket of wicketkeeper Scott Edwards. But there was drama again: Edwards missed a full ball that hit him on his pads, but the umpire denied Ireland’s appeal, which was then reviewed. The review showed the ball to be hitting the leg-stump, giving Curtis Campher his hat-trick.

The seamer, though, wasn’t done hurting the Netherlands. On the next ball, he had Roelof van der Merwe chopping on his stumps an outside off delivery. And like that, Curtis Campher had four wickets in four balls, becoming only the 3rd bowler to do so in T20Is after Lasith Malinga and Rashid Khan.

Netherlands has plenty of work to do to resurrect their innings after this incredible over from Curtis Campher. At the time of writing, they are 80/6 at the 15-over mark.

West Indies Cricket Team, T20I Cricket

It is very important to pick up wickets with the new ball in any form of cricket and the teams that have been working on it consistently have reaped a lot of rewards in the ODI format especially. Breakthroughs aren’t easy and it is very important the bowlers work on getting wickets in the first 10 overs rather than bowling defensively.

Picking up wickets in the powerplay might also take a huge effect on the outcome of the game and it can be an advantage for the bowling side as well. With a note on that, here are the teams with the most wickets in the first 10 overs in ODIs since the 2019 Worldcup.

Most Wickets In First 10 Overs In ODIs Since 2019 WC:

Zimbabwe – 4 :

Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe. (Photo: Twitter)

Zimbabwe has taken the second least number of wickets in the first powerplay since the 2019 Worldcup and it has reflected in their results as well. Having taken just 4 wickets in the first 10 overs, Zimbabwe is lagging at the 13th place in the ICC rankings in ODI cricket and they have earned just 39 rating points despite being one of the full members of the ICC.

India – 8:

India Cricket Team, Most ODI Losses
India Cricket Team (Image Credit: Twitter)

This is a big surprise, but it is true that India has picked up just 8 wickets in the first ten overs since the 2019 Worldcup and it has a lot to tell about how the Indian seamers have gone about their business. They have hardly swung the ball and haven’t beaten the edges as much as they should. They have taken the second least number of wickets in the powerplay and have dropped to the 4th position in the ICC ODI rankings.

South Africa – 9:

South Africa Cricket Team, ODI World Cup 2019,
South Africa Cricket Team (Image Credit: Twitter)

South Africa has often been changing their fast bowlers and it has taken a toll on their wickets column in the powerplay. They have taken just 9 wickets in the first 10 overs since the 2019 Worldcup which is the third least number and they will definitely want to improve on that stat to change their fortunes as well. They are placed fifth in the ICC ODI rankings with 107 rating points.

Afghanistan – 10:

Afghanistan Cricket Team
Afghanistan Cricket Team (Image Credit: Twitter)

Afghanistan has improved their overall play but one area they would really look to work upon is the wickets taking quality in the first 10 overs since the 2019 Worldcup. Afghanistan has managed just 10 wickets in the powerplay and it hasn’t helped their cause by any means. They have picked up lots of wickets in the middle overs with Rashid Khan and they are currently lying at the 10th position in the ICC ODI rankings with 62 rating points.

New Zealand – 13:

New Zealand Cricket Team
New Zealand Cricket Team (Image Credit: Twitter)

The New Zealand cricket team has been outstanding in all the formats but they would look to continue their dominance in the ODI format by working on their wickets column in the powerplay especially. They have got the quality in their bowling attack to produce results and so far they have taken 13 wickets in the first 10 overs which isn’t ideal for the number one ODI team in ICC rankings.

Pakistan – 18:

Pakistan Cricket Team
Pakistan Cricket Team (Image Credit: Twitter)

The Pakistan cricket team has been making inroads to moving up the ladder in the ICC ODI ranking especially and they are looking to build a strong core of the team to work upon. Their bowlers have been doing a good job with 18 wickets in the first 10 overs since the 2019 WorldCup but they haven’t been at their best still and are currently placed sixth in the ICC ODI rankings.

Sri Lanka – 19:

England vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI

The Sri Lanka Cricket team has been pretty ordinary in all the departments, but still, has managed to pick up 19 wickets in the powerplay since the 2019 Worldcup. Sri Lanka is still in the rebuilding phase and they will need to work on a lot of things. Sri Lanka has opted for a change in captaincy and they are currently lying at 9th place in the ICC rankings.

Australia – 19:

Australia Cricket Team

The Australian cricket team has dominated the world for a long time, and one of the main strategies has always been their wicket-taking skills in the powerplay. Australia has picked up 19 wickets in the first 10 overs since the 2019 Worldcup and is ranked second in the ICC ODI rankings at the moment with 118 rating points. They will be looking to pick a lot more wickets in the near future.

Bangladesh – 22:

Bangladesh Cricket Team
Bangladesh Cricket Team (Image Credit: Twitter)

Bangladesh Cricket Team has performed well in the first 10 overs with their bowling attack picking up 22 wickets since the 2019 Worldcup which is the fourth most for any full member side. They have been attained the results they would have liked and if they can have the same impact on the best teams, they will certainly move up the ladder. They are currently in the seventh position in the ICC ODI rankings.

Ireland – 23:

Ireland vs South Africa 1st ODI

Ireland cricket team have picked up 23 wickets in the first 10 overs since the 2019 Worldcup which is the third most number of wickets by a full member of ICC. They have had excellent growth in the international stages but they would be looking to close out games a lot which has been their only defect and they are currently struggling at the 12th position in the ICC ODI rankings.

West Indies – 23:

West Indies Team

West Indies have come really far from down to this stage in the last few years and they have a lot of match-winners on their side now. They are one of those teams that can upset any big team on their day and they have picked up 23 wickets in the powerplay since the 2019 Worldcup which is the second most number of wickets. They are ranked eighth in the ICC ODI Rankings and they will be looking to move up.

England has played a different brand of cricket that the other nations have always wanted and they have been very destructive with their batting as well as bowling. They have a good number of all-rounders on their side and look a lot more balanced in all departments. They have picked up the most number of wickets in the first ten overs since the 2019 Worldcup with 34 wickets and there is a reason why they are the World champions at the moment.

T20 is all smash and bam. Isn’t it? With much fewer overs compared to other longer formats of the game, and still 10 wickets in hand, the batsmen are liberated to stretch their arms and play their shots as the price on their individual wicket is decreased in this form of the game.

278/3 is currently the highest team total in a T20I, scored by Afghanistan against Ireland a couple of years ago; Turkey, with 21 runs against the Czech Republic, hold the record for the lowest T20I total in completed innings.

In between, there are few scores, few low scores, where the team couldn’t put much on the total despite playing out all the 20 overs and not getting bowled out either. These results are either because of the bust when the batsmen go for the boom or if the pitch is extremely challenging to bat on.

We look at the 4 lowest teams totals after playing all 20 overs of a T20I:

Ireland 85/8 vs West Indies, 2014

William Porterfield (Photo-AFP)
William Porterfield (Photo-AFP)

It was a rare bizarre low-scoring T20I game in Kingston where both teams just couldn’t score any runs and were more willing to throw their wickets away. West Indies batsmen threw their wickets away recklessly and could manage a total of 96/9 in their quota of 20 overs as pacer Alex Cusack returned with figures of 4/11.

What should have been a straightforward chase was made tricky when Ireland slipped to 3-22, but still the favourites to take the game. However, West Indies captain Daren Sammy titled the game in his side’s favour by snapping 3 wickets in three of his consecutive overs to leave the Irish at 6-49.

The visitors tried to scrap to the target but the home bowlers kept their leash on the scorecard. Eventually, despite batting for all 20 overs, Ireland fell agonizingly 11 runs short of West Indies’ total to complete a peculiar unsuccessful chase.

The matches of Zimbabwe‘s upcoming tour to Ireland are postponed following the directions from the host government.

Ireland were scheduled to host Zimbabwe for three ODIs and five T20Is in Belfast and Northern Ireland from August 6 to 24. However, those games now stand postponed, the host board confirmed on Thursday (July 22).

Zimbabwe is on the Red List of the UK government and it’s a Category 2 nation on the Republic of Ireland classification, Hence, considering the threat of covid-19, and the quarantining requirements of the visitors from the health authorities, the series has been delayed.

“Following the latest advice for the conditions around which scheduled matches may proceed in Northern Ireland – most notably the stipulations of health authorities around quarantining requirements of the incoming Zimbabwean squad – Cricket Ireland has today confirmed that the Zimbabwe Men’s tour to Ireland will be need to be rescheduled,” Chief Executive Warren Deutrom said.

“We recognise that with Zimbabwe being on the UK Red List, but a Category 2 country in the Republic of Ireland classification, approval for the series was always conditional upon the evolving advice of government.”

Deutrom also stated that the tour is likely to go ahead later in August and likely to stretch into September as well; there could be perhaps changes in the venues too.

“It is now anticipated that the series will be held in August-September 2021, but that some venue changes may be required to accommodate the latest advice received. These changes may have a number of knock-on effects with the broader playing schedule as well, and the outcome of these changes will be communicated in due course,” Deutrom added.

“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of Zimbabwe Cricket Board and all involved as we work through these latest challenges, and will provide updates as soon as possible.”

Zimbabwe are currently hosting Bangladesh; a couple of T20Is remains that end on July 25, after which they are slated to fly to Ireland, who, after drawing the ODI series, have lost the first two T20Is of the T20I series as well against South Africa.

Netherlands vs Ireland 1st ODI 2021

The Netherlands host Ireland for a three-match ODI series starting Wednesday, June 2 2021. Three matches will be played within a week at the Sportpark Maarschalkerweerd, Utrecht. There is a lot at stake for these two teams in this series. A win in these series for either of these teams can help them strengthen their position for the next World Cup qualification. The next ODI World in 2027 will see 14 teams being able to participate in the tournament. The CWC is a way to make a case for participation in the next ODI World Cup.

For the Netherlands, this is their very first game of this campaign. They are yet to get started in the league. A win in the series will help them to get up the points table. The Dutch will be playing tougher teams like England, New Zealand and South Africa later in the competition and thus a series win in these three games will do a world of good.

For Ireland, if they win the series they can get upto number two on the points table and be joint second with England. Every victory, not only earns the Irish team 10 points but also denies the Dutch 10 points as well. The side has played six games in the competition so far losing five of them.

The ground has hosted 12 T20I games so far with the team chasing having won 10 times. However lot of rain in the past month means that the pitch will be lower and slower with run-scoring not an easy option for batsmen. The batters will have to grind out their runs. The team winning the toss will look to bowl first and pick up early wickets due to the overhead conditions. Chasing has been the way to go so far and it remains to be the same. A smaller ground will means lots of runs in store as well.

The Dutch side has played some cricket in recent times and have ended up on the losing side more often than not. They recently drew an ODI series against Scotland. They will be playing their very first match in the CWC Super League. Every win gets the team 10 points each in this tournament. The Netherlands will thus be desperate to get the first points on board. The side will play against teams like England, South Africa, and New Zealand. Thus these three games and the points associated are key for the Dutch. They will try their best to bag 30 points here.

Ireland ODI Team

Ireland, meanwhile, have played a bit more cricket in recent times. In the CWC however, they lost five out of the six games that they have played. Their net run rate (-1.076) is way less than where they would ideally like to be. Apart from the Afghan team, Ireland have also played against England in this competition.

Ireland have had a clear upper hand over the Netherlands in recent times. Overall in 10 ODI games, The Irish side has beaten the Dutch side seven times with Holland managing to win only once. The sides have played more T20I cricket in recent times where Andrew Balbirnie’s men have beaten the Dutch side in seven out of their last nine games.

The Irish team is way more experienced than the Dutch. The likes of Balbirnie himself, Paul Stirling, George Dockrell, Kevin O’Brien, and William Porterfield have been the pillars of Ireland for the last decade.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, have some exciting young prospect in the team. Some familiar faces such as Stephan Myburgh and Logan van Beek have joined the team as they seek to build a well-oiled unit. Blessed with some young talent in the form of Bas de Leede and Scott Edwards, the Dutch will be eyeing a triumphant start to the series on Wednesday.

Netherlands and Ireland face off in a three-match ODI series which is a part of the Cricket World Cup Super League. A good performance in the series will enable both these teams to qualify for the 50-over ODI World Cup. The Dutch are the only qualifying team in the competition. The side has been playing the same tournament at World Cricket League Division 2 level since 2015. They are also making a comeback into the format just after two weeks of playing Scotland. The two-match series was drawn at 1-1. The first of the three matches will be played on June 2 at the Sportpark Maarschalkerweerd in Utrecht.

On the other hand, the Irish will play their third series of the CWC Super League having played against England and Afghanistan in the competition. The side has won just one game in six matches losing most recently to the Afghan side. Afghanistan beat Ireland 3-0 in the recently completed ODI series. The Irish and the Dutch team have played mostly T20I games in the last few years with the Dutch having won seven out of their last nine games against the Irish in the white-ball format.

Cricket South Africa(CSA) on Monday confirmed that the Proteas will be touring Ireland in a historic full limited-overs series for the first time in July 2021. The matches will be played from July 11 -25 starting from three one day internationals that will be part of ICC’s Cricket World Cup Super League (CWCSL) and followed by three T20 internationals.

This will mark the first instance of South Africa touring Ireland for more than one game. The proteas’ only visit to Ireland came in 2007 for a one-day international in Belfast which makes the upcoming series a lot more historic for the host nation. The venues for the first three one-day internationals and the first T20 will be Malahide while the remaining two T20 games will be held in Stormont.

Cricket South Africa Thanks Cricket Ireland For Their Cooperation

The Director of Cricket South Africa, Graeme Smith was extremely delighted with the tour dates getting confirmed very quickly and credited Cricket Ireland for cooperating to finalize the schedule. We Welcome Back South Africa – Chief Executive of Cricket Ireland

Warren Deutrom, Chief Executive of Cricket Ireland commented on the tough times that the countries have been going through to reschedule the home series over the period 2020-2023 and compared it to a jigsaw puzzle to fix the matches. He was happy that his side will be playing six world cup league matches in the series and welcomed South Africa to their nation after 14 years.

“Given the significant changes to the Future Tours Programme due to the postponement of home series’ from 2020 – and all other countries having to reschedule fixtures over the period 2020-2023 – it has truly been a jigsaw puzzle for world cricket administrators to try to make the pieces fit,” Warren Deutrom, Chief Executive of Cricket Ireland said.

“We look forward to the season ahead and thank our touring opponents for working with us on this restructured season. For our senior men, there are six World Cup Super League matches included in the schedule, in which we welcome back South Africa who last played here 14 years ago,” he added.

On Tuesday (26th January), Afghanistan completed whitewash after beating Ireland by 36 runs in the last game of the three-match ODI series at Abu Dhabi.

Due to the fog in certain areas of Abu Dhabi, which was affecting the transportation in the city, the teams arrived late at the stadium. So, the match was rescheduled to begin one hour later of the original scheduled time.

After Ireland chose to field first, Afghanistan managed to score 266/9 (50 overs) in the first innings. In reply, Ireland only managed to score 230 runs (47.1 overs) before losing out their all wickets. In both those innings, Rashid Khan played very important roles.

2nd innings (Ireland): Ireland’s record ODI centurion Paul Stirling didn’t get enough support in chasing

Opener Paul Stirling once again provided a good start but he didn’t get proper support from the other top-orders. Both opener James McCollum (3) and captain Andy Balbirnie (5) lost their wickets cheaply inside the first powerplay as Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi took those wickets respectively. However, Stirling controlled the chasing for Ireland as he completed half-century in 38 balls, inside the first 10 overs of that innings.

Then Stirling and Harry Tector set up the crucial 61 runs partnership for the third wicket. But in the 21st over, leg-spinner Rashid Khan broke that partnership by dismissing Tector for 24 runs. Later, Rashid took another wicket as he dismissed Curtis Campher for 12 runs.

Just ahead of Campher’s dismissal, Stirling became the most ODI centurion for Ireland after completing his 12th ODI century.

In the 37th over, Mujeeb Ur Rahman finally bowled Stirling for 118 runs off 119 balls (9 fours and 6 sixes). Since then, the Afghan bowlers took the match in control.

Rashid Khan finished that innings with the bowling figures of 9-0-29-4. Though Simi Singh (20) and Andy McBrine (16) tried their best at late, but those were not enough for the Irish to finish this ODI series with at least one victory. Also, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/43) got two wickets as he dismissed both the Irish openers.

1st innings (Afghanistan): Middle and lower-order batsmen fought and pushed the team to the challenging first innings total

Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Javed Ahmadi provided a firing start but Craig Young brought back the Irish team quickly after picking up top three Afghanistan batsmen inside the first five overs. While Gurbaz scored 22 runs, Javed scored 19 runs and previous ODI centurion Rahmat Shah scored only 2 runs.

Soon after the first powerplay, Andy McBrine dismissed Hashmatullah Shahidi (10) as Afghanistan were struggling on 66/4.

Then skipper Asghar Afghan and Mohammad Nabi built up that innings with their crucial 51 runs partnership for the fifth wicket. In the 27th over, Simi Singh finally brought the break through by dismissing Nabi (32) through lbw. Then captain Afghan and Gulbadin Naib set up another crucial partnership of 45 runs for the sixth wicket.

But while Simi Singh dismissed Afghan (41 runs) in the 35th over, off-spinner Harry Tector got his first international wicket by dismissing Najibullah Zadran for a duck.

Then Naib and Rashid Khan controlled that innings and set up the 47 runs partnership for the eighth wicket. In the 44th over, Simi Singh ended Naib’s innings as he bowled the former Afghanistan captain for 36 runs.

Later Rashid Khan batted aggressively in the death over and scored 48 off 40 balls (3 fours and 3 sixes) before Josh Little sent him to the pavilion in the 49th over. While Mujeeb Ur Rahman scored run-a-ball 18 not out, Naveen-ul-Haq was unbeaten on 10 runs off 7 balls.

Among the Irish bowlers, Simi Singh (10-1-37-3) and Craig Young (8-0-61-3) got three wickets each, however, Young was little expensive.

Brief Scores: Afghanistan – 266/9 in 50 overs (Rashid Khan 48, Asghar Afghan 41; Simi Singh 3/37) vs Ireland – 230 in 47.1 overs (Paul Stirling 118, Harry Tector 24; Rashid Khan 4/29)

Result: Afghanistan won by 36 runs

Afghanistan have already secured this ODI series as they are leading it by 2-0 with one to go. Afghanistan won the first game of this series by 16 runs and second match by 7 wickets.

Afghanistan have already secured this ODI series by winning both the first two ODIs of this series. But the last ODI is similarly important for them as this ODI series is a part of the 2020–23 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. So, Afghanistan will have to put their best performance again to clean sweep their opponents in this series.

Afghanistan players have performed really well as a team in this ODI series as they always returned strongly from the challenging situations. Even there were some moments where Ireland already started to dominate, but Afghans still managed to bring back their team into the game through the right decisions at the right time.

Young pacer Naveen-ul-Haq impressed in both the ODIs (3/68 & 4/42) while off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman also shined with the balls (2/40 & 3/46). Rashid Khan is also playing a crucial all-rounder role as he scored a very important fifty in the first ODI and took crucial wickets in both the ODIs.

While the opener and wicket-keeper batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored a brilliant century in the first ODI of this series, which was also his ODI debut, Rahmat Shah (103*) and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s (82) strong batting and partnership helped Afghanistan to chase down the 260 runs target very comfortably. As a team, they are becoming really stronger.

Full Squad

Asghar Afghan (C), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Rahmat Shah, Naveen ul haq, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan (vc), Yamin Ahmadzai, Usman Ghani, Azmatullah Omarzai, Gulbadin Naib Sayed Ahmad Shirzad, Javed Ahmadi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Sharafuddin Ashraf.

Though Ireland lost both the ODIs of this series and they have already lost this ODI series, the upcoming ODI is still important for them due to a part of the 2020–23 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League.

In both those ODIs, Ireland got the proper control but failed to maintain those in the crucial period, especially in the late moments in the innings. Also, the top-order batting failure is a crucial factor for them to lose this series. Except for the in-form Paul Stirling‘s century in the last game, there was nothing to say about their top-order batting as both the opener Kevin O’Brien and captain Andy Balbirnie failed to provide strong starts.

Curtis Campher has hugely impressed in this UAE tour with his crucial all-round performances. Wicket-keeper batsman Lorcan Tucker is also improving as a batsman. Simi Singh has also made some good impression in this UAE tour.

Full Squad

Andrew Balbirnie (C), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, Kevin O’Brien, Neil Rock, Simi Singh, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young, Shane Getkate.

Afghanistan are obviously favourite for the last game of this ODI series. However, Ireland always have a tendency to improve their game in the late period of a series, so they will try their best to end this away series with a victory.

Afghanistan secured the three-match ODI series against Ireland after winning the second ODI at Abu Dhabi on Sunday (24th January). With this latest seven-wicket victory, Afghanistan are leading this series by 2-0 with one match to go.

After winning the toss, Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie decided to bat first. Ireland ended their first innings on 259/9 (50 overs), thanks to the century of the opener Paul Stirling. In reply, Afghanistan chased down that target in 45.2 overs after losing three wickets, thanks to the unbeaten century of Rahmat Shah and 82 off Hashmatullah Shahidi.

2nd innings (Afghanistan): Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s strong giant partnership made the chasing comfortable

Afghanistan lost both their openers inside the powerplay. While Barry McCarthy trapped Javed Ahmadi (16) for lbw in the eighth over, Curtis Campher dismissed the last ODI’s centurion Rahmanullah Gurbaz (31) in the very next in same lbw fashion.

But their next two batsmen Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi controlled that second innings very well as their solid third wicket partnership made their chasing journey very smooth.

Even after completing their respective half-centuries, they didn’t stop as they continued their strong batting performances and set up a huge third wicket partnership. Before Simi Singh dismissed Hashmatullah Shahidi for 82 runs off 100 balls (8 fours and 1 six) in the 42nd over, Shah and Shahidi put the 184 runs partnership for the third wicket.

Soon after that partnership was broken, Rahmat Shah completed his fifth ODI century in 103 balls and remained not out on 103 runs off 109 balls (10 fours and 2 sixes).

1st innings (Ireland): Paul Stirling’s century helped the Irish team to put a competitive first innings total

Opener Kevin O’Brien (1) once again lost his wicket at the early stage, only in the second over of the match, while captain Andy Balbirnie (5) also lost his wicket very quickly. Off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman took both those first two wickets. But then another experienced opener Paul Stirling and Harry Tector controlled that innings as Ireland scored 43/2 at the end of the first 10 overs.

Stirling and Tector built up a strong third-wicket partnership of 84 runs, where Stirling completed his half-century in 47 balls. While Gulbadin Naib dropped an opportunity to dismiss Stirling in his own ball during the 11th over, it proved very costly for them.

After Tector lost his wicket for 24 runs, Stirling put another strong partnership with in-form Curtis Campher. They set up the 106 runs partnership for the fourth wicket. During that long partnership, Stirling completed his 11th ODI century in 113 balls, which is the joint most number of ODI centuries for an Irish batsman. In this same ODI, Stirling also reached the 4500 ODI runs milestone and became the first Irish batsman to reach this feat.

On the other hand, Campher scored 47 runs off 52 balls (4 fours) before his dismissal broke that long fourth wicket partnership. While Rashid Khan dismissed Campher in the 42nd over, Stirling was finally dismissed by Naveen-ul-Haq in the 45th over after scoring 128 runs off 132 balls (12 fours and 4 sixes).

As their was no set batsman in the death overs, Ireland batsmen failed to manage the big first innings total.

Afghanistan right-arm pacer Naveen-ul-Haq bowled very well in the death overs as he finished with the bowling figures of 10-0-42-4. Also, Mujeeb Ur Rahman bagged three wickets for 46 runs in his 10-over quota. Rashid Khan (1/49) and Gulbadin Naib (1/64) also collected one wicket each in that innings.

Brief Scores: Ireland – 259/9 in 50 overs (Paul Stirling 128, Curtis Campher 47; Naveen-ul-Haq 4/42) vs Afghanistan – 260/3 in 45.2 overs (Rahmat Shah 103*, Hashmatullah Shahidi 82; Curtis Campher 1/28)

Result: Afghanistan won by 7 wickets (with 28 balls remaining)

This ODI series is a part of the 2020–23 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, where Afghanistan are currently leading this ODI series by 1-0 after the end of the first ODI. While they played the opening match of this series on last Thursday (21st January) at the same venue, Afghanistan won that match by 16 runs.

After winning the toss, Afghanistan scored 287/9 (50 overs), majorly thanks to ODI debutant Rahmanullah Gurbaz (127) and Rashid Khan‘s late blasting (55 off 30 balls). In reply, despite the brave fighting of wicket-keeper batsman Lorcan Tucker (83 off 96 balls), Ireland finished the second innings on 271/9 (50 overs).

Now, another victory will secure this ODI series for Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Ireland can’t afford another defeat in this series as they must have to win both the remaining matches to win this series.

So, the cricket fans are excited to experience another competitive ODI match on Sunday.

Afghanistan restarted their international cricket journey with a close 16-run victory, which made their positive start in their journey in the 2020–23 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League.

Wicket-keeper batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz (127 off 127 balls) created a history in the last game by scoring a ODI debutant century, which was also the highest individual score for an ODI debutant wicket-keeper batsman. He had a 120-run opening partnership with Javed Ahmedi (38). Though other Afghanistan batsmen struggled in their international return, Rashid Khan (55 off 30 balls) scored a smashing half-century to secure the tough first innings total.

Though the Afghanistan bowlers started well, they faced tough challenges in the second half of the second innings. While Naveen-ul-Haq (3/68) got three wickets, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/40) and Rashid Khan (2/56) have bagged two wickets each.

In both the innings of the previous ODI, Ireland struggled in the first half, but returned to the game incredibly in the second half. However, ultimately, they were just few inches away to snatch the victory.

Andy McBrine single-handedly brought back the Irish team in the first innings by taking up all the first five wickets. He finished that innings with the bowling figures of 10-0-29-5.

Chasing down the challenging target, the Ireland team was losing wickets at regular intervals. Finally, with the strong help from the lower-order batsmen, wicket-keeper batsman Lorcan Tucker scored the fighting 83 runs off 96 balls.

While Ireland team has the tendency to improve their performances with the time progress, the cricket fans can expect a good comeback from them on Sunday.

According to the AccuWeather forecast, the entire will be mostly sunny and clear. There is no rain threat in the entire day. While this is going to be an important ODI series, the cricket fans can expect a good series opener on Thursday.

The game time temperature can be between 19°C and 25°C. Very much expectedly, the mid-afternoon temperature will be higher.

Sheikh Zayed Stadium (Abu Dhabi) will host this ODI series opener between Afghanistan and Ireland on Thursday. Ahead of this crucial series, this venue just recently hosted the ODI series between the hosts UAE and the visitors Ireland.

Though it was the four-match ODI series between the UAE and Ireland, the middle two matches were unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19 health concern. While UAE successfully managed to chase the 270 runs target in the first ODI, the last ODI pitch was slower as the hosts failed to chase 229 runs target as Ireland bundled them out for only 116 runs.

Talking about the overall ODI records at this venue, the first batting sides majorly enjoy and we can see the similar picture in the day ODIs too. Even 250+ totals are really tough to chase at this venue, especially in the day ODIs.

This ODI series will be Ireland’s second ODI series in the 2020–23 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. The hosts England were their first opponents in this competition, where Ireland lost by the 2-1 margin in last July-August.

In the ongoing UAE tour, Ireland just completed their four-match ODI series against the hosts UAE. After losing the first ODI by 6 wickets, the next ODIs were cancelled due to COVID-19 health concerns. While the last ODI of that series was also rescheduled, Ireland levelled that series by winning the last ODI by 112 runs.

With the world remaining highly alert due to the COVID-19 pandemic, events all across the globe have taken a massive hit. After England’s tour of Sri Lanka, Indian Premier League, New Zealand’s tour of Australia, and several others being postponed, Ireland have also taken the same step. Their upcoming series against Bangladesh has been rescheduled. The later date at which the series would take place is yet to be announced.

The Irishmen were due to play three ODIs and four T20Is in May in Belfast and England. The Ireland Cricket Board suspended the rubber for the time being following advice from UK and Irish governments. Also, the seven-match series had to be postponed since the England Cricket Board (ECB) made a call that no cricket would take place in the nation until the 28th of May.

Ireland cricket chief Warren Deutrom stressed the importance of the safety of the players, fans, coaches, and the community beyond that. Due to the alarming increase in cases, it was highly unlikely that the series could have been proceeded with as per schedule. Furthermore, Deutrom has vowed to continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with the health bodies and stakeholders across the country to update them on the home season.

“Once the scale of the Covid-19 pandemic was understood, and the advice of both Governments and partner boards was sought, it became increasingly unlikely that this series could proceed as scheduled. “We have a responsibility to protect the wellbeing of players, coaches, fans and the wider community, and will not hesitate to take a safety-first approach to our operations over coming months.”

“We will continue monitoring the situation, and will liaise as necessary with relevant sports bodies, public health agencies and our stakeholders here and abroad, and provide further updates on the home season in due course.” Deutrom said as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.

Ireland cricket thanks Bangladesh Board for their co-operation in the matter:

The chief of Irish cricket didn’t forget to thank the BCB for their co-operation in this issue throughout. Deutrom also hoped to reinstate the series in the near future when everything is in a correct position.

“We would like to thank the Bangladesh Cricket Board for their helpful cooperation in reaching this decision, and we shall work with them at establishing new dates for the series when we are all in a position to plan for the future with greater certainty.”

Ireland to play Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Test format in 2020:

Afghanistan and Ireland have been assigned only one-off Tests for the next five years, barring a two-match series between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe in 2021. Now, it will be in jeopardy, as Zimbabwe is facing a tough time within the board.

Recently, Sri Lanka faced England team in Test format at Lords, where they almost sealed the Test match. However, the brilliance from England bowlers took the game away from Ireland. Following the Test, they will play Sri Lanka and New Zealand apart from fixtures against West Indies, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka was scheduled to tour Zimbabwe in January 2020 for 2 Tests, but with the ICC suspending Zimbabwe Cricket for political interference in the running of the affairs of their cricket in July this year that series is definitely out.

In order to maintain the schedules in the right method, the Sri Lankan cricket board is looking to replace Zimbabwe Test with Ireland Test, which is actually scheduled to play in February. However, now, after the new change, Sri Lanka will start their 2020 season with the one-off Test facing Ireland.
