Netherlands thump Bangladesh by 87 runs.
The ICC World Cup 2023 was host to two games on Saturday (28 October). AUS vs NZ, which was the 27th match of the tournament, took place at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala whereas NED vs BAN match 29 was played at iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
AUS vs NZ was a cliffhanger that had almost everyone on the edges of their seat. Australia were asked to bat first and it was a magnificent outing for them as Travis Head (109) and David Warner (81) took the bowlers to the cleaners and smashed them all over the park. Their 175-run partnership laid the platform for the power hitters to take them to a big total.
Despite middle-order not firing, Australia ended with a gigantic total on the board. Glenn Maxwell (41), Josh Inglis (38), and Pat Cummins (37) came out all guns blazing and smashed bowlers all over the park. Their valiant effort in the end powered Australia to the gigantic total of 388 runs on the board. For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips was the pick of the bowlers with his 3 wickets.
New Zealand had a decent start but Devon Conway (28) and Will Young (32) couldn’t capitalize on the start they got. Rachin Ravindra (116) and Daryl Mitchell (54) kept New Zealand in the hunt with their breathtaking batting. However, after that, the onus was on James Neesham (58) to take his team home.
He did that to some extent and almost won the game for his team. But got run out on the penultimate ball of the game. Australia held their nerves in the end and won the game by the margin of 5 runs to register their 4th win of the tournament.
In NED vs BAN, the Dutch side batted first and were bundled out for 229 runs. They didn’t bat well. But handy contributions from Wesley Barresi (41), skipper Scott Edwards (68), and Logan Van Beek (23*) helped them end with a fighting total on the board.
The Netherlands were on the top with the ball right from the start. They didn’t let Bangladesh settle as well and had them tottering at 70/6. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (35) tried to get going but failed. Mahmudullah (20) kept the hopes of the fine alive but Netherlands bowlers were spot on and bundled out the opposition for 142 runs to win the game by 87 runs.
