Veteran Sri Lankan player Angelo Mathews was at the receiving end of a bizarre dismissal in the game against Bangladesh. The all-rounder was timed out during the 38th game of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi witnessed history being scripted. Angelo Mathews became the first batter ever in the history of cricket to get timed out. After Sri Lanka lost Sadeera Samarawickrama, the veteran batter came out to bat.

However, he made a small error as he brought the wrong helmet with him. The substitute fielder came running with a different helmet as the strap of his helmet broke and umpires weren’t pleased with it. In the meantime, Bangladesh appealed and following that celebrated the wicket. Angelo Mathews tried to explain something to Shakib Al Hasan but the latter didn’t withdraw his appeal.

Angelo Mathews also tried to explain things to umpires but the officials were bound to rule and deemed him out. As per the rules in the ongoing World Cup, “batter should be at the crease within 2 minutes of the dismissal.” The Sri Lanka batter walked out to the middle-late and then after that had issues with the helmet.

After he was deemed out, Angelo Mathews was furious. He was livid with the things happening in the middle. As he walked back to the dressing, he kept murmuring something and threw his helmet in agony.

Here are the videos of the full incident:

Angelo Mathews was dismissed without even facing a ball in the game. This sparked a massive controversy as Sri Lanka players in the dugout were seen having a chat with Bangladesh’s head coach. The two teams have had a history of indulging in a lot of battles. Earlier in the game Kusal Mendis and Shoriful Islam exchanged heated words.

BAN vs SL: MCC Rule on batter getting timed out; Angelo Mathews bags bizarre dismissal

The MCC rule book on the timed-out dismissal states: “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

Angelo Mathews’ wicket jolted Sri Lanka further as he would’ve been crucial for the team in such conditions. The island nation was left tottering at 135/5. The onus will be now on Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva to take the team to the fighting total.
