In what was the bizarre incident, Angelo Mathews became the first batter in the history of the game to be given out timed out. The Sri Lanka batter bagged the dismissal during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 game against Bangladesh at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

After Sadeera Samarawickrama got out, Angelo Mathews came out to bat. The batter however took a little extra time to come out. As he was about to take his guard, the strap of his helmet broke and he immediately called out for a new one. The substitute fielder came out running with a new helmet.

But in the meantime, Bangladesh appealed and umpires abide by the laws, and the batter was termed out. Angelo Mathews tried to explain something to Shakib Al Hasan but the latter didn’t withdraw his appeal. The umpires too weren’t convinced as he was given out.

The ICC World Cup 2023 playing conditions pertaining to “Timed Out” dismissals reads: 40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.

As per the rules, it was out but had Shakib Al Hasan withdrawn the appeal it would’ve been not out. This, however, has yet again ignited the spirit of the cricket debate. Even commentators were left stunned after the dismissal.

Angelo Mathews himself was furious after the dismissal as he left the field in utter agony. He even threw his helmet in anger and was seen having a heated conversation with officials on the sidelines.
