Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar came out in favour of Shakib Al Hasan over his Angelo Mathews timed-out dismissal. He believes what the Bangladesh skipper did during the ICC World Cup 2023 clash was well within the laws of the game and he supports him.

The game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the World Cup witnessed history as for the first time we witnessed a timed-out dismissal. Angelo Mathews was the unlucky one to bag the mode of dismissal. He came out to bat and as he was about to take his guard, the strap of his helmet broke.

In the meantime, Shakib Al Hasan appealed to the umpire and it paid off as officials termed the batter out. It was well within the rules of cricket, which state: “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within two minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed Out.”

It created a lot of controversy after that as Angelo Mathews was fuming after that and many fans and experts lashed out at Shakib Al Hasan. They criticised the Bangladesh skipper for his appeal and slammed him for upholding the spirit of the game. The Sri Lanka batter and umpires told him to withdraw his appeal but he didn’t.

With almost everyone lashing out at Shakib Al Hasan, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar supported him. He highlighted the Bangladesh skipper’s words and said that he did right. Speaking to Star Sports, he explained:

“Shakib Al Hasan was desperate to win. He mentioned in the post-match presentation that he’s a warrior and it was like a war, he wanted to win. If it’s allowed in laws like running out the non-striker, he did that within the laws. So whatever is under laws, I’ll always support that and it was right to do what he did.”

Shakib Al Hasan also talked about the dismissal of Angelo Mathews after the game. He said that if it is in the rules of the game then he doesn’t mind taking it. He highlighted that he’s at war for his country and can do anything to win. He added:

“One of our fielders came to me and said if you appeal now he’ll be out. Then I appealed and the umpires asked me if I’m serious or whether I am going to take it back. It’s in the laws. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong. I was at war and I had to take a decision to make sure my team wins. Right or wrong, there will be debates but if it is in the rules I don’t mind taking those chances. That (altercation with Mathews) helped, a bit more fight, I’m 36 and normally fight doesn’t come easily but happy it did today.”
