Expectations were sky high from Shubman Gill in the ongoing final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India has a stunning record in Ahmedabad, his IPL home ground. In IPL, he averages almost 67 at this venue. In 12 IPL games, the right-handed batsman has scored 669 runs with the help of two centuries and three half-centuries. Earlier this year, he also scored a Test century against Australia at the same venue.

However, the past records and stats made little difference on Sunday (November 19) as Mitchell Starc sent him back cheaply to give his team a solid start. Starc could have dismissed Shubman Gill for a first-ball duck after making him edge one behind the stumps. However, the ball landed just in front of the fielder in the slip cordon.

Shubman Gill was frustrated after being dismissed:

Playing his first-ever World Cup final at the senior level, Shubman Gill just could not deal with the pressure as he looked tentative. His knock lasted just 7 balls as he miscued a shot off Starc’s delivery straight to the fielder at mid-on.

The right-handed batsman tried his trademark short-arm jab pull shot off the front foot but could not get the timing. And as Adam Zampa held on to an easy catch at mid-on, Shubman Gill could not hide his emotions as he was seen shouting angrily before walking off.

Watch:

Talking about the game, Australian captain won the toss and opted to bowl first. At the time of writing this report, India were reeling at 83 for 3 in the 12th over. Captain Rohit Sharma once again gave India a quick start by scoring 47 off 31 balls before being dismissed by Glenn Maxwell. Shreyas Iyer could score only 4 runs before edging a delivery from Cummins to the wicketkeeper.
