  • Pakistan posted a total of 283 runs.

  • Afghanistan are off the flying start in their chase.

Pakistan keep on producing poor efforts on the field and the ongoing game against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023 was host to one. The 22nd match of the tournament is taking place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Afghanistan have set a target of 283 runs to chase. They have started pretty well as Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran have played the new ball bowlers well. They were also helped by some sloppy work on the field by Pakistan that gave them two runs extra.

It happened during the 4th ball of the 3rd over when Shaheen Afridi bowled back of a length delivery that was angling across to Ibrahim Zadran. The batter played it behind square on the off-side and only one run was on the cards.

Hasan Ali, who was stationed there, threw the ball back to Mohammad Rizwan but it had an awkward bounce in front of the keeper, who couldn’t gather it well. Afghanistan players took one run and if this was not enough another overthrow happened.

The fielder gathered the ball and threw it at the bowler’s end, aiming the stumps. He missed the target and the backup fielder had to run across to his left. This allowed Afghanistan to steal the third run and put Pakistan under pressure.

PAK vs AFG: Pakistan post a total of 282 runs on the board

Pakistan opted to bat first and were off to a great start. Openers Abdullah Shafique (58) and Imam-ul-Haq (17) added 56 runs for the opening partnership. After that, it was a great sign for Pakistan as skipper Babar Azam returned to form and played a magnificent innings of 74 runs. He made sure that his side stayed in the game despite wickets at the other end.

His valiant contributions were supported well by Shadab Khan (40) and Iftikhar Ahmed (40), who hit some lusty blows in the end and made sure that Pakistan ended with a decent total. Their effort powered Men in Green to a total of 282 runs. For Afghanistan, Noor Ahmad was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 3/49.
