Former India National Cricket Team all-rounder Irfan Pathan was delighted after the Afghanistan National Cricket Team stunned the Pakistan National Cricket Team in the 22nd match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Monday, October 23.

The Afghanistan registered a historic 8-wicket win against the Babar Azam-led Pakistan National Cricket Team and this was the first win for the Afghans against the Men In Green in eight ODIs.

They were set a target of 283 runs on the tricky Chennai surface and the top four batters of the side were enough to take on the Pakistan bowlers and earn them a win. Riding on the sensational half-centuries from Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Rahmat Shah, they completed the run-chase in 49 overs.

After the victory, the Afghanistan dugout erupted in a wild celebration and they also did a lap of honor in Chennai. Irfan Pathan was delighted after the victory of the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side and he joined their celebrations by dancing with Rashid Khan.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Hashmatullah Shahidi said that they pulled off a great run-chase. He said:

“This win tastes nice. The way we chased was very professional. Looking forward for the other games. The way we chased today, we’ll do it again. The quality cricket that we have been playing from the last couple of years, the belief was there when we were playing the Asia Cup also.”

Hashmatullah Shahidi added that he wanted to make the ICC World Cup 2023 a historic tournament for his team and they did that by registering wins over England and Pakistan. He said:

“At the start of the tournament, I said that we want to make this tournament historic for our country people. First was England, today Pakistan, looking forward for the other games.”

Hashmatullah Shahidi further said that they delivered a complete performance in the match. He said:

“We’ll try our best to play positive cricket and do a lot for our country in this World Cup. The spin bowling department did very well. We gave a chance to Noor and trusted in him, he showed his talent. The way Gurbaz and Ibrahim started the innings, they gave that momentum and confidence. The game was in our hand from the beginning till the end. The last partnership that me and Rahmat played was also good.”
