    Afghanistan, on Monday (October 23), registered a historic win over Pakistan in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The neighbors locked horns against each other at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

    Before the clash, they had played seven ODIs against each other and Pakistan had won each one of them. Afghanistan did come close to beating Pakistan on a number of occasions but eventually fell short. But on Monday, they finally crossed the finishing line to register their first win over Pakistan in ODIs. They also won more than one game in a World Cup for the first time.

    Before beating Pakistan, the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side had thrashed reigning world champions England by 69 runs in the ongoing competition. Batting first, Pakistan scored 282 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs.

    Captain Babar Azam top-scored for his side with 74 while opener Abdullah Shafique also played a crucial 58-run knock. Towards the end, useful cameos from Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan helped Pakistan recover from 206 for 5 and post a challenging total.

    Celebration time in Afghanistan:

    While the total looked imposing on a tough pitch, Afghanistan made light work of it. They remained in control throughout the chase and eventually crossed the finishing line in 49 overs by losing just a couple of wickets. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) and Ibrahim Zadran (87) gave their team a solid start by adding 130 runs for the first wicket.

    Rahmat Shah (77*) then shared a crucial stand of 60 and an unbeaten 96 runs with Zadran and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (48*) to take his team home. It was a historic win and Afghanistan’s fans made sure to celebrate it in style. Several videos of their celebration have gone viral on the internet.

    One video shows a fan celebrating the win by firing his gun into the air, while firecrackers erupted all around as Afghanistan fans celebrated the historic triumph.
