Netherlands players Sybrand Engelbrecht and Colin Ackermann came up with a brilliant gesture of sportsmanship during the ongoing game against Afghanistan at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

The incident took place in the 14th over of the innings when Engelbrecht and Ackermann were in the middle, fighting it out with the bat for the Dutch outfit. Earlier in the game, Scott Edwards won the toss and opted to field first. The Netherlands were off to a poor start as Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed opener Wesley Barresi for just 1 run in the very first over.

Max O’Dowd and Ackermann then steadied the ship with a 70-run stand before the former was run out for 42 runs. And soon after the opening batter’s departure, the incident took place. On the third ball of the 13th over bowled by Mohammad Nabi, Engelbrecht punched a full-length delivery towards long on before he and his batting partner decided against taking the single.

The reason was Ackermann unintentionally coming into Nabi’s way of stopping the ball. The veteran spinner tried to run to his right to stop the ball but was stopped by Ackermann. And while Engelbrecht set off for the single, he was sent back by Ackermann in a remarkable moment.

Talking about the game, the Netherlands were reeling at 129 for 6 in the 31st over at the time of writing this report. Engelbrecht was batting on 37 and giving him company was Logan van Beek on 2.

Afghanistan and the Netherlands in the World Cup so far:

Both Afghanistan and the Netherlands have done well in the competition so far and have punched above their weight. While Afghanistan have defeated England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka so far, the Netherlands have defeated South Africa and Bangladesh. While both teams are likely to miss out on the semifinals, they can still qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy if they finish in the top 7.
