ICC World Cup Points Table 2023: Updated Standings, Most Runs, Most Wickets After SA vs AFG Match 42: South Africa beat Afghanistan by five wickets to get back to winning ways.

Chasing 245, South Africa were off to a good start with openers Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock adding 64 runs for the first wicket before departing in quick succession. It was followed by a 50-run stand between Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen before the latter departed. Van der Dussen, however, scored an unbeaten 76 to take the Proteas home.

Earlier in the game, a fighting knock of 97 not out from Azmatullah Omarzai helped Afghanistan recover from a precarious situation to post a challenging total of 244. Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz added 41 runs for the first wicket before Afghanistan lost three wickets in quick time to find themselves 3 down for 45.

It was followed by a 49-run stand between Omarzai and Rahmat Shah before the latter was dismissed by Lungi Ngidi for 26. The likes of Ikram Alikhil (12) and Mohammad Nabi (2) also failed to get going and Afghanistan found themselves reeling at 116 for 6.

The 200-run mark was looking like a distant dream at that stage. However, Omarzai stood firm at one end and got good support from the tailenders. The likes of Rashid Khan (14) and Noor Ahmed (26) came up with useful cameos to help their team post a 240-plus total. Omarzai’s 97-run knock came off 107 balls and contained 7 fours and 3 sixes.
